The people were educated to the fact that cerebral palsy is a birth defect and not a hereditary disease, and that with proper diagnosis and care, these children could and should be educated. Program Progresses Through these initial efforts, and with the very valuable assistance of Leon Lundahl, superintendent of School District 47 in Crystal Lake, as well as the office of County Sueprintendent Richard Tazewell, special education of the handicapped in McHenry county pressed forward. Suddenly it_ seemed that everyone in the State had made the same discoveries and legislation was passed, which stated that all counties should set up advisory districts on special education: Mr. Lundahl is the chairman of the McHenry county advisory district, which recently named as county director Fred Rozum, who is looking into these needs. At the opening of this school year, Mr. Rozum stated that McHenry county boasts of five classes for educable mentally retarded, one of which is for high school age children; one class for the trainable mentally handicapped; one for physically handicapped; and one for the maladjusted children. They are all filled to capacity. The hard of hearing children are still being sent to Lake county to round out their classes for the deaf. Mr. Rozum, in summing the situation, assured those in attendance that it was largely through the hard work and diligent help of UCP which made this new outlook on special education possible. He stressed the need for continued cooperation in this effort, MENTAL HEARING FOR AREA MAN WHO SHOT POLICE (Continued from Page 1) shop in Volo, where the revolver was purchased. After breakfast, they arrived back at the stable and Parrish and Brown became involved in an argument. Parrish told authorities that in the scuffle that followed, the revolver fired in some manner and Brown was struck. The sheriff's patrol car, in that area at the time, were approached by a passerby and told of the shooting. sijice help to these children canhbt life forthcoming, if his office is uninformed. • Robert Lambourn will again be teaching the physically handicapped classroom, and will be assisted by Mrs. Green and by the new physical therapist, Mrs. Gisella Higgins of Crystal Lake. Cerebral Palsy of McHenry County encourages any interested adults to attend the next meeting on Oct. 19 at the handicapped classroom, West school, Crystal Lake. Each year, many hundreds of persons assist in the fund raising efforts of this organization, and it is sincerely hoped that some of these workers will take an active interest by attending this first meeting under the leadership of the new president. Mrs. Boehm stated that a president is only as good as hose who are working with her, and she sincerely hopes l:hat many new faces will be seen at this October meeting.
