Several Thousand Handicapped In Area Ask Work Opportunity In order to emphasize the importance of National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week, which is Oct. 3 to 9. Goodwill Industries has issued a report on the present status of the handicapped in the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin area. According to the report more than 11,882 handicapped people reside in this area, and of that number almost 40 per cent are unemployed. The handicaps of these people range from polio to mental retardation. "It isn't because they don't want to work or can't work," A1 Soldvvish, community relations director of Goodwill Industries remarked, "but because they either lack proper training and guidance, or because employers are afraid that they won't be able to handle the job." Goodwill Industries is one organization that is combating these problems every day, through its training programs for the handicapped. Goodwill Industries is one organization that is combating these problems every day, through its training programs for the handicapped. At Goodwillj the handicapped are tested to determine what course of training will be most beneficial to each particular individual. The handicapped person is then given onthe- job-training in the workshop. When this individual is fully trained he is ready for private industry. Those with more severe disabilities, which do not permit the mastery of a skill, are given sheltered employment at Goodwill. The repair of donated clothing and household articles by the handicapped workers is the principal work program. In this area call Mrs. Agnes T.
