'TjajpS-' Page Four THE McHENBY PLAINDEALEH Thursday* October-7. 1965 fU^tKtXWe^iTRia, VICTORIOUS IN CONFERENCE START QT CITY SOFTBALL CHAMPIONS By: Earl Walah Ere this hits the newsstands the first game of the World Series will be in the record books. Who will win it? In spite of the powerful Don Drysdale, we pick the Twins to win the first game. Come the second game and the great one, „ Sandy Koufax, on the mound for Los Angeles. We have to go with Sandy in this one. From that point on it depends on pitching and the way the ball bounces. So you think we are beginning to hedge at this point? That's just because we are. Being an American League fan, we want to pick the Twins. But, if somebody told us to put our money where our mouth is we would have hooks in our pocket. A terrible dream tells us the Dodgers will win it in six games. If such should come to pass, there are certain loveable characters in these parts who will make the coming winter a long, long spell for us. MCHS Homecoming is in the air as students plan to pick a queen and Coach Dean Hargis plans to pluck a football victory from Dundee^ Some people told us Dundee wouldn't be so strong this year. Yeah? Did you see the way they beat Zion's powerful team? That takes a bit of doin'. The Warriors should be hitting good stride this week. If they beat Dundee by just one touchdown, we will be satisfied. (Hargis would probably settle for one point). Thinking about that press coop that everybody built, we remember the original construction had a ladder like we used to climb to go to the hay mow. It was Joe Schmitt who decided we could never make it up that ladder so he came through with the steps. The one who comes along to enlarge the coop will have a plaque nailed to the wall in his honor. Let's not forget the start of the Thursday Nite Club (volley ball) activities this (Thursday) evening. We haven't had the pleasure of meeting Father Guzzardo, new pastor of St. Patrick's parish, but have the following report of his recent visit to the Plaindealer office: Fr. Guzzardo came in the office to get acquainted Thursday afternoon. He is very friendly and began reminiscing about many things, including his days as altar boy for Fr. O'Rourke in Rockford. He recalled what a fine athlete he was and said that even in his seminary days Fr. O'Rourke played with the semi-pro baseball teams. He was also a fine hockey player. He told a story about Manager Joe McCarthy, who addressed a gathering in the East While you re out looking... don't miss Ford's % ••• ••• • • *••• *••• •• • • • • • • • * • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • V V J It's within minutes J • of your home. • • 49 new models plus • • Ford's all new Bronco.# m Now at your local • ! Main St. McHenry, I1L Displaying a new offensive alignment and presenting a strong defense for the first time this year, Marian Central won its Suburban Catholic Conference opener against Immaculate Conception at Elmhurst last weekend. Now the Hurricanes tangle with one of the 1965 standout teams, entertaining N o rt e Dame of Niles at 2 p.m. this Sunday. Notre Dame was second to the Hurricanes last year, an(J has been either the winner 6r runner-up in each year of the SCC's existence. In winning over IC, Marian extended its league winning string to eight since it won all seven loop games played while capturing the crown in 1964. Notre Dame, of course, is itching for revenge Marian has won the last three games between the two schools and Marian kept Notre Dame from winning the title a year ago with a come-from-behind 13-7 victory. Tim Murphy ran 14 yards for the winning touchdown. Big factor in Marian's win at IC was an improved defense. Coach Tom Parsley praised the "front four" on defense - Tom Kobza, Chuck Schlottman, John Hinner and Tom Majercik - for their play. He cited the linebacking of Dave Schuler as a pleasant factor, also. Jack Hester made his starting role at quarterback a successful venture, pitching for two touchdowns. He completed five of 11 passes, and the shift means Fogarty can concentrate on halfback and that Dennis Jackson will stay at ,end. i I Hester passed 26 yards to Wayne Motulewicz in the third quarter af»dx12 yards to Jackson in the fourth period. One big development was the improved offensive blocking which helped Mike De Wane plough for 87 yards in 18 carries. The husky fullback gained almost all the 96 yards Marian earned on the ground. Hester netted 67 yards via passing. Marian's defense held IC to five yards rushing and 73 yards through the air. One of those three completed passes, however, was for 32 yards and a touchdoyvn. Parsley plans to work on pass defense this week. He has two inexperienced players at the deep spots - Tom Carroll, a junior, and Jackson. This is Jackson's first season in high Winners of K. of C. WARRIORS DEFEATED BUT SHOW IMPROVEMENT many years ago and was asked to name his nominations for an all-star baseball team. He completed the list except for catcher and left everyone wondering who it might be. Then McCarthy told them his choice was a priest in McHenry -- Fr. O'Rourke, who he thought would have been an outstanding athlete if he had chosen that career instead of the priesthood. Many years ago we persuaded Father O'Rourke to show us a scrap book that .contained many sports reports from Eastern newspapers. We were pledged not to blab the contents, but can tell you that big league baseball lost a great catcher to the priesthood. He had all the tools. We met the Clarence Smiths recently and naturally got into baseball talk. Clarence is a White Sox fan, converted from the Yankees after Yogi Berra got the bounce. We warned him that he will have to do better next year or we may send him back to Yankee fandom. Now he plans to go down to training camp next spring and give A1 Lopez a few words of wisdom. We can hardly wait. It is only October, but the count down on shopping days 'til 'Chirstmas has started. We must be a bunch of nuts. "CHEYENNE AUTUMN" Technicolor - Panavision Richard Widmark Carroll Baker James Stewart -- plus •-- George Peppara Elizabeth Ashlev "THE THIRD DAY" The Warriors traveled to Barington last Saturday in quest of their first victory of the young season. After losing badly to North Chicago the week before, few thought the Warriors would give Barrington, always a respected foe in NorthSuburban play, anything to worry about. But they did! Although they lost, the McHenry boys did a fine job in containing the Barrington offense, and even though they didn't chalk up a six pointer, they did move the ball well throughtout the game. The improved offense was againhalted by Warrior mistakes, not the opponent. The Warriors had offensive drives stopped by a fumble and a 15 yard penalty. Penalty Cost Bronx A Score Neither team made a serious threat on their first series of downs. The Warriors were fortunate however. After faftlyig to make a first down, Rich Soda kicked. Hopkins took the ball for the Bronchos and scampered for what appeared to be 6 points. However, a clipping penalty brought the play back. Fumble Leads To Score The Warriors held Barrington and took over in the middle of the first quarter. Rich Soda, school football and he Is making a remarkable transition from baseball and basketball - two sports in which he has excelled for three campaigns. Marian will have its hands full stopping the Newton boys Mike, quarterback, and Tom, halfback. Both played key roles in Notre Dames' 26-13 win over St. Edward. St. Ed forced Niles to scrap in the final half to gain the victory. Steve Hurley gives the Dons a good kicking game. Rich Fruehe and Mike Shaw caught touchdown passes from Mike Newton. In league openers last weekend, Joliet Catholic tripped a strong St. Francis team, 1S-7. Marian, Notre Dame and Maimion were other first game winners. Parsley sees a balanced pace and figures the champion could lose two matches and still come out on top. the Warrior quarterback, faded back to throw but was hit hard when he attempted to pass. Barington recovered at midfield and was in good field position to start a drive that led to their only T.D. of the game. The Broncho drive was geared well by Greg Brown. The Broncho quarterback rolled around right end for 15 yeards to the Warrior 35. Then he went left for another 10 yards to the McHenry 25. From here, Hopkins ran to the 15. Having established their ground game during this series, Brown took his team to the air for the score. With the ball on the 7, Brown threw to end Don Schumaker for the 6 points. Burt Engle kicked the PAT. The score came right at the beginning of the second period. Barrington controlled the ball almost the entire third quarter. With Wood and Hopkins carrying the ball, they moved down to the Warrior 20 yard line. Then a 15 ya?d penalty and a few good Warrior rushes which resulted in more lost yardage for the Bronchos made it 4 down and 31 yards to go. Warriors Score Safely Taking the ball over dh downs, the Warriors moved up to the 45 yard line. After failing to make a first down, Rich Soda again went back to kick. This time, kicking with the wind, Rich lofted one high and deep, down near the Barrington endzone. Barrington's Don Schumaker gathered up the ball in his own endzone where Paul Kilday brought him down for a safety and two points. Warriors Threaten After being the victims of a safety, the Bronchos had to kick off to the Warriors. McHenry took the kick and began their offensive series on the Barrington 40 yard line. From here, Reinboldt ran the powersweep down to the 10 yard line where it was first and ten. Everything looked good for the Warriors until a 15 yard penalty occurred which put them back on the 25 with a first down and goal situation. It was too much yardage for the Warriors to make and Barrington took over on downs. The Warriors are down, but are not out. The boys have a good attitude and work hard. Perhaps these assets will bring the Warriors a homecoming victory this week. Game Statistics War. Bar. The race was reminiscent of the Warrior-DeKalb football game as the rain just poured down on the runners. The times were slower due to the poor footing of the track. The Warrior Varsity dropped its match 34-21. Donovan, Elder, and Bodenner, all from Dundee, led the pack of runners. Donovan's time was 10:03 Sam Lamont led the McHenry runners with a time of 10:14. Coming in\atl 10:26 and in fourth place was Mark Alderson. Other McHenry runners in the top ten were Dale Snell (10:29), Jim Zvonar (10:38) .and John Carter (10:49).
