Many parents look forward to the time when Dotter will many--and have a phone of her own. T^ACQER TALK. . The teachers of District 15 hope to start an informal column in this newspaper explaining some of the methods we use as well as going over some of the subjects we teach. As a fifth-grade teacher I am more familiar with what is taught to the intermediate pupils in the McHenry public schools. A typical day would start with the pledge of allegiance to our flag, followed by a ten-minute period of attendance - checking,' moneycollecting, and a current event discussion from clippings the children have brought to class. At 8:40 a.m., the pupils pass tp--their-<eading classes and return to tlieir home rooms at 9:30. We are using the Ginn reading series which is regarded as one of the better basal reading series. For the next hour spelling and language (English when we were in schopl) are the subjects. After a 15-minute recess at 10:30, we spend an hour on arithmetic. Our school system has turned to a modern math program this year and we will have more on this subject at a future date. We then take a forty-five minute lunch period, and because .there is no lunch room in Landmark school, the pupils who buy their lunches go to the high school cafeteria escorted by one of their teachers. At 12:30 class resumes with an hour of social studies. In the fifth grade this consists of United States history and geography, a study of the other North American countries, and a short summary of the geography and history of the South American countries. The final hour is spent on science and health, and on some days a short study period is allowed to get some of the home work finished. Sometime during the week a one-half hour period each of music, art and physical education is taught by a qualified teacher. I realize that put in simple form this way our school day sounds quite uncomplicated and easy to administer; but when you toss in twenty-five to thirty ten-year-olds, you find that teaching is quite interesting and rewarding.
