/ ThuxSdaly^ December 30,1965 n: m a^op,9ff=-aro%,Bhi8 (Continued from Page 1) to all of the road crews whQ delated many hours of the haliday for the convenience of thTjciriving public. A» a new year starts, we e*f#hd a big "thank yOii»V to eacti .of theln! <•> tJO^ing .the; holiday. vacation period, mahy teen-agers have taken ori temporary jobs which h$K Put cash into their pockets- and a feeling of independent. Some of them certainly must ask themselves occasionally whether or not they might be smart to drop school and enjoy this self-sufficient feeling permanently. The answer is simple and it's worth $50,000. That's the average difference in a lifetime income for those who finished h i g h s c h o o l a n d t h o s e w h o didn't, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The lure of weekly pay, a feeling of independence, the need- for quick cash to purchase or to operate a car <-- all are elements which inevitably lead to the $50,000 question. A $70-a-vveek pay check may look good now, but the picture changes when you consider how it will look in twenty years with added family responsibilities. Unskilled workers can hardly compete with skilled technicians. Unbelievable changes have occurred since the horse and carriage days of 1900. The earth's population has doubled twice and will do so again soon. Mass production and automation have replaced hand labor. Our standard of living is improving. The atom has been harnessed for peaceful and for military purposes. Doctors are d e v e l o p i n g a r t i f i c i a l o r g a n s and - conquering diseases. The hOman life span has been increased. •One thing is common to all tlfese developments. Each was the discovery of educated man applying his knowledge to help ogiers. -No one can dispute the fact tlfat education constantly assii m e s greater importance. Who can say that it will not cOntinue to demonstrate how ta use the newly acquired tools of our environment to the best advantage as we continue to move ahead? view of a future outlook, the loud .jing'ing .of .extra change in the pocket today sinks into relative unimportance. Jn front of us on our desk are a- variety of reports, pro and c§n, on the activities of our y«ung folks. T)ne of the unfortunate Occurrences took place last Thursday night when the Marshall Jacobs family attempted to turn on a colorful holiday lj^hling display outside their McHenry Shores home, only to fjjid that all of the wires had been cut. This was the second yfcar for an almost identical bit of vandalism at that particular residence. -It is no wonder that the JScobses are discouraged with auy further attempts to provide a* display which has been widely admired by passersby. Nipt many persons would take tile time required to install 1^90 lights in one display. ^Ve can only say that we will bg among many who will feel very deprived of some real holiday beauty if the display is not in view next Christmas time. We're sure others were h{Jppy to travel the distance fnom McHenry several times It s time for us lo say • Thank You" for q I wonderful year. 9 ? ^{ladtyone S 'The Family Store" McHENRY ---t-«» th®, .season? j just > to bB< inspired by(.this'! elegani 's|>6& tacle. How unfortunate that one or two people can destroy t h e w o n d e r f u l s p i r i t w h i c h prompts so many of our neighbors to create these displays for our enjoyment. Another case was recounted in a letter from a reader who tells of youngsters smearing a newly painted garage with red paint. In some cases there is a fear that notifying authorities will bring retaliation^ whe;n the o f f e n d e r s a r e k n o v v r j . ; : • ! t ' j f i On the credit side : of'! th£ ledger is a report that' came to our desk Monday imorning, listing the mahy Ways in which young people of the county, had helped to make Christmas brighter for others. One case concerned the Woodstock high school Future Farmers of America chapter, which earned sufficient funds to buy turkeys for eight families on relief in that area who would not otherwise have known the joy of a real Christmas dinner. In addition, Girl Scouts from Wonder Lake and McHenry were included among those who made 200 dozen cookies for veterans at Downey Veterans hospital. It may not take "one bad apple to spoil the bin," but it seems that very few can give hundreds of good young people a bad reputation. The holidays are always made especially happy by notes from friends who still remember their home city through the weekly paper even though they are no longer part of the community. Just such a note was received last week from John and Daisy Smith of Hilo, Hawaii, whose picture card was ample proof of their location t his Christmas. With our several inches of snow, the message of an orchid growing in their garden left us a bit envious. A second note from Mrs. Frank L. Maresso extended "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to one and all who put the Plaindealer into a fine newspaper". We are most grateful to Mrs. Maresso for her kind words. K. A. F. UCPT0H0U) 'li KICK-OFF DRIVE A Look Ahead To 1966 ( Continued From Page 1 ) Off-street parking in the business sections is a problem of long standing for which the city will continue to seek answers. Testifying to the anticipated growth of the community, Mayor Doherty points to recent work started in Boone Valley subdivision, where sixty lots have been platted and Phase I of the extensive construction program has started. Another business item of interest is the -anticipation of decreased rates with the establishment of a new fire code due to go into effect this year.
