Wilson Of '65 Turned Back As Happenings JANUARY The beginning of the New Year saw St. Mary's grade school team and the men's team from St. John's, Johnsburg, win the K. of C. holiday basketball tourney held in St. Mary's gym. St. Mary's beat St. Patrick's, 48-20 with the last of the Hester boys scoring 23 points. Don Bentz led the older boys with 22 points. McHenry was proud of the showing "made in college basketball by one of its fine young athletes. Paul Morenz played great basketball, for the university of Wisconsin's team. The first half of the wrestling s e a s o n s h o w e d Mc H e n r y ' s grapplers with a team record of five wins and two losses. Among the outstanding wrestlers was Ron Gelvin with a 7-0 record. Also undefeated were Rich Wolf with a 3-0 record. Coach Greg True's last trip to McHenry as the coach of the St. Edward Green Wave of Elgin was not a profitable one as the Fultonmen bested the retiring True's team in a non-conference title 81-76. The McHenry Wrestlers beat Zion Benton 32-11 in a fast action North Suburban conference match. The Warriors beat the Zion Zee-Bees in an overtime game, 84-80. Big Don Bentz, scored 99 points in two basketball games. In the Johnsburg Forester- Woodstock game . Don accounted for 48 points when the Johnsburg team won 96-78. A few days later in a game with Richmond he totaled 51 points. The McHenry Warriors dropped their fourth conference game, the third by one point, as they were edged by the Dundee Cardunals 60-59. The McHenry grapplers defeated a scrappy team from Grayslake in an exciting match 22-19. S.I.H. looked for better days for his beloved White Sox with the acquisition of John Romano in the catching department. The Warriors were back in better form when they romped over Barrington 72-56. The Sports Editor wondered if there were any bob sleds left in the McHenry area. During the heavy snowstorm that hit our town he reminisced about McHenry kids spending their Saturdays flipping bobs from one side of town to the other. It was great sport unless some grumpy driver had a long whip. FEBRUARY Joe Frett, founder of the McHenry County baseball league, was honored by the Woodstock Elks lodge at its annual Sports Night. He was presented with t h e d i s t i n g u i s h e d c i t i z e n award. McHenry Warriors won two big games to take over third place in the conference. They breezed past North Chicago 77- 66 and defeated Libertyville 71-68. The high flying Warriors swooped down on the Crystal Lake Tigers and beat them 84-53. The Johnsburg Forester basketball team eked out a 102- died in the Woodstock Residence. Dec. 13 -- Mrs. Mary Kozla of Wonder Lake died in the Valley Hi Nursing; home. Williams, 71, of Sunnyside Estates, died in Memorial hospital, Woodstock. Dec. 29 -- Mrs. Julia Hansen, 56, of Lakemoor, died at her home following a long illness. 100 victory over Richmond in a league game. The high flying McHenry Warrior cagers thrilled a standing room only crowd in the local gym as they hurdled the Woodstock Blue Streaks in a crucial conference tilt by the score of 70-62. In a two day state district tournament held at Barrington high school, McHenry's wrestling team of five seniors and s e v e n s o p h o m o r e s p l a c e d fourth in a seven team entry. Dave Freund and Ron Gelvin were winners. Jim Anderson lost the championship bout after regulation and overtime match on the referee's decision. St. Mary's grade school varsity had a mighty successful conference season, missing the championship by only one point and less than a second. They lost to Hickory Hill of Carpentersville. The McHenry Warriors remained very much in the North Suburban conference basketball race as a result of their decisive 76-62 win at the expense of the Zion ZeeBees. St. Mary's grade school team regained a leg on the traveling American Legion trophy when they beat McHenry Junior high 45-42. Johns burg's Forester basketball team squeaked by Richmond 86-85 in the first round of the Northern Illinois amateur league play-offs. MARCH The McHenry high school wrestling team ended four months of rugged practices, conditioning, competition and four tournaments. Ron Gelvin set a new record with 46 career victories. Several other boys had outstanding records. The Warriors were unsuccessful in their attempt to grab a share of the North Suburban conference crown when they fell before the league titlist Dundee by a score of 56-5l. Woodstock's defeat of North Chicago pushed the Warriors into the third slots in the final standings. I In the regional \ tourney at Elgin the Warriors walloped Woodstock 95-75, only to be defeated by Elgin, 7^-74 in an overtime period. St. Mary's grade school basketball team dropped a one point overtime decision to St. Patrick's of St. Charles, 41-40, in the diocesan tournament. The high-powered Cary basketball team emerged as champions of the Northern Illin o i s a m a t e u r l e a g u e . T h e Johhsburg Foresters t°ok third place. C o a c h B e r t H a g e m a n n ' s j freshman basketball team concluded a very fine season with a 57-49 win over Dundee. It was the thirteenth win in fourteen outings for the frosh. The only defeat was at the hands of the Woodstock team, 39-37. S. I. H. had his green tie and all the trimmings ready to wear on St. Patrick's Day. T!he C.O.F. state basketball tourney ended on a highly successful note. It was the nineteenth successive year that the local C.O.F. court sponsored this popular event. The local winners in their divisions were St. Mary's in Senior; St. Mary's junior; St. John's of Johnsburg in Heavies senior division. Members of the McHenry high school faculty trounced the junior high faculty in a basketball game played before a fine crowd, 57-32. Chuck Cuda, Cliff Fultoii, Jerry Fain and Bill Perry vvere the mainstays for the high school team. Dan Suffoletto and Ed Sobotkiewicz were the stars for the junior high school. Charles "Bud" Grover was named head basketball coach at Marian Central Catholic high school to replace Joseph Gubbins who resigned. S.I.H. reminisced about Easter twenty-two years ago when the Easter rabbit left a baby girl at his house. Since then he has always liked the song "She's the sweetest baby in the Easter Parade". Wisconsin sports news service announced that Paul Morenz won a Major "W" in basketball. Bob Vaupell, a senior at Carroll college, won two letters in Golf. Paul Nitz of Marian Central Catholic high , school " was named on the all-star basketball team. Rich Smith of McHenry high school was named on the North Suburban team. The boys received their awards at an All-Star banquet in Chicago. MAY Between penicillin and pills S.I.H. had an active week, but 'something terrible happened* he couldn't smoke a cigar for two weeks. He had the pleasr ant experience of tweeting Ro<?Ky Marciano, former world champion heavyweight, who Was a guest in the home of Tony Varese. S.I.H. found him a very comfortable fellow to visit with on various subjects. S.I.H. also attended the MCHS sports banquet at the V.F.W. club and acted as toastmaster. Awards were presented to John Oppenheim, best football defensive player, Ron Gelvin, most points, wrestl i n g ; G e o r g e K o c h , m o s t points, track and most valuable football player and athlete of the year. Rich Soda, baseball award; Mike Keller, best record, cross country; and Wayne Hiller, best free throw record for basketball. Then our Sports Editor had a great time at the sports banquet at the Elks Club in Woodstock where the Big Six of McHenry County high school sports were honored. Among the coaches receiving recognition was our own Leonard McCracken who has been with McHenry high since 1928, Bill George of Chicago Bears fame was the guest speaker. It was the end of four years of college for the sports editor's daughter and he had started to haul her belongings home in installments. He took a trip to Dubuque and came home with a little strain on the springs. He observed the evidence of the flooded Mississippi river area. The McHenry Sham rocks beat Johnsburg 9HTat~^ their opening home game. Mayor Doherty was on hand to throw .out the first ball. Chuck Hiller was traded from San Francisco Giants to the New York Mets. ' Lloyd Freund was chosen as commissioner of the county baseball league. /Fred Petersen took over as manager of the Shamrocks and has the help of Harold Freund, a veteran player and manager. S.I.H. heard that only four boys from the McHenry area Who started their baseball careers in Little League 10 years ago are still playing the game. Bill DiCicco is playing at Austin Peay State college, Clarksville, Tenn.; Paul Morenz at Wisconsin; Dave Klapperich, Culver Stockton in Missouri; and Vern Peterson at Bradley university. The last roundup came for S.I.H. For four years he has been loading and unloading the family car in his trips to Dubuque with his college daughter, Patricia. But graduation day came and the proud father and mother watched their only daughter receive her diploma from Clarke college. Paul Morenz has been showing his hitting power for the Johnsburg Tigers. In the game With Richmond he hit a home hln when the Tigers won the game 13-2. The Shamrocks beat Johnsburg 8-5 but Morenz hit a long home run straight It was Sports Unlimited at out to center field, the Plaindealer office when by chance, S.I.H. and Harold ""Zekp" Bacon of Crystal Lake arrived at the same time. It took only a bit of recollection to add up thirty-six years of consecutive sports reporting for the Plaindealer. "Zeke's" column "Bacon's Strip", appeared from 1929 to 1935 when "So I hear" began writing. Both gentlemen insist they were very young when they started their reporting career. Over 150 of this area's youths participated in the third annual McHenry Jaycees Sports Jamboree. S.I.H. was king for a day.... it, was Father's Day and he announced early that he was boss around the house for the day and certain people let him bask under that assumption all day. He spent one of the laziest days of his life, just enjoying a big breakfast, reading the Sunday paper, snoozing and watching his beloved White Sox play Boston. JULY Cliff Fulton, varsity basketball coach at McHenry high school since coming here in 1951, has resigned from the faculty. The Fultons will make their home in DeKalb, where he has been employed in the physical education department of Northern Illinois university. S.I.H. congratulated the National Leaguers for winning the All Star game. He thinks the team was wonderful. As a long suffering White Sox fan (he made it in 40 years) he is waiting patiently for- next year's All Star game. S.I.H. mourned the death of his Aunt Elizabeth Walsh.' According to Father Parker she planned to go to Ireland, but went to Heaven instead. Martin Smith from St. Louis paid S.I.H. his annual visit. AUGUST S.I.H. was pictured with a guitar at a marathon held in the city. John 'Looze thought the -Plaindealer had started a comic strip. Willys Schreiner though S.I.H. should get a wig if he wanted a musical career. After thirty years of editing and writing the sports page for the McHenry Plaindealer Earl Walsh relinquished his job to Gene Brooke. He has a Master's Degree in Education and will teach industrial arts at McHenry high school. The McHenry Coifnty League Allstars beat the Johnsburg Tigers 1-0 in a rain shortened game. Ed Buss is again the McHenry Country Club golf champion. Shooting a fine 72 for the final 18 holes of the 72 hold medal play tournament he edged Art Jackson by 2 strokes. The Johnsburg Tigers won their third consecutive McHenry County league championship when they defeated Dundee by a 5-1 score. SEPTEMBER The McHenry Warriors lost their first game of the season 6-0 to DeKalb's Barba on a muddy, rain soaked field in the last 5 seconds of the game. S.I.H. eulogized his coworker, Editor Adele Froehlich, for her long service to the public as a newspaper woman. He was the one who named her, "Brenda". The Warriors lost their second game in as many starts when North Chicago overpowered them 40-7. Although the Warriors lost their third game to Barrington, they showed big improvement in their game. OCTOBER The new Plaindealer Sports Editor Gene Brooke and his wife, Patti, welcomed a new daughter on Oct. 10. Deanne Marie has a 3-year old brother, Greg. The Warriors homecoming was spoiled by powerful Dundee team, 20-6. So I Hear left McHenry fot four days, quite an event in his life. He visited his daughter in Detroit. He also talked with a former McHenry Plaindealer employee, Ann Nye, who now lives in Detroit. Jane Weber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Weber, was crowned homecoming queen at Marian Central high school in Woodstock. DECEMBER The McHenry Warriors defeated the North Chicago team on their own home floor, 63-55. The night before they lost to Crystal Lake, 70-64. Rich Soda and Tom Evans lead the Warriors to a- near upset at- Zion, only to lose the game in the final three seconds, 62-61. The Warriors wrestling squad continued ifs winning ways with two. impressive victories and a tie. They downed Grayslake 32-12, Libertyville, 26-11, and tied a strong Arlington team 22-22. ^ - June Freund became the bride of Mr. James E.
