Section Two -- Page Six W. \ THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday* March 18* 196S CONSERVATION EXPERT SPEAKS ROTARY CLUB Bert Atwood, past president Of "the Crystal Lake Rotary club, was guest speaker for the Mc- Henry Rotary club last Thursday. In addition to his work with Rotary Mr. . Atwood has served for ten years as a national officer of the Izaak Walton League of America, and since 1955 has been secretarytreasurer of the Izaak Walton League Endowment. In his McHenry talk, he said that democracy and the capitalistic systems were largely a product of the new wealth created by the development of the U. S. western frontiers. Mr. Atwood continued to state that when the westward migrations were stopped by the Pacific ocean, the nation started a slow progress of .political degeneration which, if not checked, will eventually bring Americans to the living Standards which exist in many European countries. There the land is saturated with people who cannot continue to maintain the standards which they have enjoyed in the past, he added. Mr. Atwood expressed the opinion that granting statehood to Alaska will open unlimited land and resources for development which will create new material wealth for the nation comparable to that generated by the settlement of the western states. He concluded with the observance that Alaska has many times paid, back the nation's purchase price, and predicted that this is even insignificant in view of what it will be worth to this country in the years ahead. In 1962 Mr, Atwood was pre^ sented the "American Motors Conservation Award" for his work in behalf of the wildlife of Alaska and for his surveys which provided the basis for settlement of national controversies in connection, with the Kenai Moose Range and Admiralty Island in Alaska. In 1963 he received the Izaak Walton League "Conservation Award" for his work in developing a means to fight stream pollution which has been successfully used in many parts of the nation. This came about during the seven years he served as general chairman of the Cook County Clean Streams Committee, of which he was one of the organizers. Last summer he completed a study of "The Controversy in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area" which received wide acclaim and was given nationwide distribution. Over 1,500 At' Witness Meet "Jehovah God's kingdom, for which we pray, will crush out all unrighteousness by means of the battle of Armageaddn, paving the way for a new order free of the corrupting influences of this world." These words"" concluded the keynote address of the three: day convention of Jehovah's witnesses at the Crystal .Lake high school this past weekend. The speaker was Angelo A. Catanzaro, district minister for Jehovah's witnesses in parts of the midwest. From tfte'local congregation, some seventy delegates assembled as a part of a total attendance of 1,565 from nineteen congregations of Jehovah's witnesses from northern Illinois, according to Dominick Fontana presiding minister here. Catanzaro began his discussion with the statement, "Worldwide there is eyidence of a moral collapse which effects every man, woman and child; none of us can shrug it off or evade it." He continued, "Reports show that the average citizen now faces odds greater than one in ten that he will be mugged, robbed, or otherwise victimized by criminals within the. next ten years. "Crime is increasing by five times the rate of increase in the population in the United States. Low moral conduct is all around us," Catanzaro declared. On Saturady afternoon, twenty seven new ministers were baptized by water immersion as an outward symbol of their complete dedication to the service of Jehovah God. Catanzaro outlined the re- PUBLIC AID ROLL SHOWS INCREASE DURING DECEMBER In December there were reductions in the Old Age Assist sponsibility of Jehovah's witnesses and then quoted a New York minister, not one of the Witnesses, who said, "Until its members can testify to what their religion is doing for them, the church has failed to reach its full potential as a vital institution. We need those who can take the witness stand and testify to what is in their hearts . . . Your religion never comes alive until you do something about it." According to Fontana, meetings here will resume Tuesday night as usual at the Kingdom Hall, 11605 Catalpa Lane, Woodstock. ance and Blind Assistance rolls, and an increase in the numberof persons receiving Aid to Dependent Children, Disability Assistance, and General "Asistance.
