t•'* *1* I ' One Pag# Four •••.,•» *> ^ai4>w SO I HEAR ... THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER Thursday, February 3,198® By: Earl Waft* Waited the longest time to get out of a parking space on Green Street the other day. Then, the nicest motorist came along, stopped and let me back oyt. He wanted my parking space! Oh, once in a while a good guy comes along and gives you a break even though he doesn't want your space. There is nothing wrong with any of us or the whole world that couldn't be cured by practice of courtesy and good manners. Walter Hopkins has an amusing story. John Freund, the shoemaker, had to convert to gas heat in his shop. Couldn't find a place to buy coal. ATTENTION BOWLERS! Dick Smith phoned to let you know the Men's County Bowling Association Tournament has set Feb. 15th as the closing date for entries. It's a fine tournament, fellows. Better get aboard. The Ice Fishing Derby at McCullom Lake is all set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12- 13. A lot of good people are sponsoring the event to raise funds for a new and larger youth center. Such effort seems worthy of support. A habit learned from our mother is to keep a dictionary beside our chair while reading. Her training was to look up any word you didn't know. And look it up right now, not later. Listening to pronounciation of some words in radio and TV reports sends us to the dictionary in a hurry. Many words are pronounced with the accent on a different syllable than we learned. We are sure they are wrong, then look it up and find either way is correct. Wish Mr. Webster would make up his mind. A note from Harriet Smith, , now in Florida, tells us her husband, Clarence, hopes we are enjoying the snow up here while he is getting in shape to give the Sox a few pointers when he gets to Sarasota next month. Clarence also adds that Stanky is his type of manager. We think Clarence's wife is too good a cook for him to get in shape. He had better cut down on the calories and wear a rubber shirt or Stanky may mistake him for Smoky Burgess. In which a Cooking Columnist, Marie Schaettgen, offers an assist to the sports department : Coaches Corner ? ? ? Cook's Corner??? Perhaps we should merge. It might help Or will it? According to Earl, the Warriors needed little more salt and pepper in last week's game. And more heat under the players. Maybe the basket that they were aiming for should have been larger. Should have turned the heat down at the start so as to have the score well-done at end. Next time perhaps Mr. Anderson will let me suggest some necessary ingredients such as, a good hot peppery talk with plenty of vinegar and spice. Never tried Soda in my soup - that might have helped Earl's sweet tastebut 'Evans to Betsy, Earl, give the kids a chance!" --" Marie We give everybody a chance, Marie. It is the opposing teams who haven't given our' bSjK a chance so far. But, let the records show we haven't complained about our team's record. No. We didn't say they needed more heat and pepper. That, they had! Playing a game is like making soup. Bring to aboil, but don't let it boil over. WRESTLERS END SEASON IN MRlt - ' V '"c I ' • '•1> First row: Tony Koleno, Terry Morrison, Jim Zvonar, Larry Young, Carl Parino, A1 Solestio and Sam Lamont. Second row: Forrest Viita, Mike Sobacki, Willard Stahl, Jerry Glass, Jim Laursen, Wayne Heir, Earl Hansen and Pete Smith. Third row: Coach Hutchinson, Jim Keller, Tom Koleno, Tom Stine, Ken Schuerr, Rich Tonyan, Tom Dougherty, Bill Voeltz, John Fiedler, David Weikel and John Doherty. MCHS Wrestling Squad Crushes Dundee 37-12 To End Dual Season Conference Toy rnament at Zion Next Equestrian Champion So far this season only the Warrior wrestling squad has given Warrior fans much to cheer about. The wrestlers are the only team to have a successful dual season this year. The most exciting aspect of the squad is that most of the members are juniors and will be back next year with the hopes of compiling even a better record than this year. In dual matches, . McHenry Wrestlers had an 8 win, 4 loss, and 2 tie record. The results of the matches were: McHenry 28, Lake Zurich 19. McHenry 27, Larkin 17 McHenry 14, N. Chicago 27. McHenry 32, Grayslake 12. McHenry 26, Libertyville 11. McHenry 22, Arlington 22. McHenry 19, Grant 27. McHenry 33, Crystal Lake 20. McHenry 17, Barrington 23. McHenry 30, Antioch 8. McHenry 35, Elgin 9. McHenry 17, Zion 20. McHenry 36, Cary Grove 6. McHenry 37 Dundee 12. While all squad members help considerably in establishing the team's winning record, the following boys were especially important. All won 10 or more matches. w i t Terry Morrison (95) 11 2 1 Sam Lamont (120) 10 4 0 Jim Laursen (165) 10 3 0 Tom Dougherty (hwt) 11 2 1 All of the boys mentioned are juniors. With such records, coach Hutchinson must be encouraged about next year's possibilities. Qnly three seniors were regulars on the squad. Each of these boys will be missed and all had winning records. Seniors leaving the squad are: Jim Zvonar (112) 10 4 0 Earl Hansen (145) 10 3 1 Dave Weikel (154) 6 4 2 Beat Dundee to End Season The Warriors finished their win at Dundee. Losing only two dual season with an impressive matches and tieing another, the McHenry grapplers smothered Dundee 37 - 12. It Was the last dual match and helped the Warriors prepare for the conference wrestling tournament this weekend at Zion. Results of the Dundee match were: 95 Morrison (McH) was pinned by Kiss 0-5, team score, 0-5. 103 Koleno (McH) was pinned by Scaralata 0-5, team score, 0-10. 112 Zvonar (McH) decisioned Kiss 7-1, team score, 3-10. 120 Lamont (McH) pinned Lemke 5-0, team score 8-10. 127 Voight (McH) decisioned Gillilan 1-0, team score, 11-10. 133 Penrino (McH) decisioned Komsarchuk 5-0, team score 14-10. 138 Sobacki (McH) decisioned McCarthy 5-2, team score, 17-10. 14 5 Hansen (McH) pinned Koesche 5-0, team score, 22-10. 154 Weikel (McH) tied Popp 3-3, team score, 24-12. 165 Laursen (McH) decisioned Barron 4-0, team score, 27- 12. 180 Schuerr (McH) pinned Peissenweber 5-0, team score, 32-12. hwt Dougherty (McH) pinned DuVall 5-0, team score, 37-12. This weekend the Warriors travel to Zion to see what they can do about capturing the conference crown. It is a difficult test of wrestling and the team' could use your support. Try to make the matches and watch McHenry's most successful squad this year. WARRW LOSE 10 TIGERS M> HlttS® JO-53 The McHenry b a s k e tball team lost two more games over the weekend and skidded deeper into the conference cellar. The two weekend disappointments began on Friday night as the Warriors played host to the Tigers of Crystal Lake. Playing like true Warriors, McHenry fought to only a three point deficit at hajf time, but fell alpart in the last two stanzas to lose 78 - 63. Saturday evening found the Warriors at North Chicago - a team that had never won against McHenry since it joined the conference. Revenge was the keynote as North Chicago humiliated our Warriors 90 - 53. Spirit seemed high during the first half of the Crystal Lake game. Warrior fans watched their team play pretty good ball and had hopes of a victory. However, costly mistakes during the second half allowed the Tigers to notch up the victory. Reinboldt, Soda, and "Carstens carried the scoring load for McHenry. Reinboldt hit seven shots from the field and added two free throws for his total of 16. Carstens hit well from the"*field. Kit chalked up 15 points on six field goalp and three charity tosses. RicffSoda added 11 points. Leading the Tigers in scoring were Miller and Dickinson. Miller netted 20 points and Another Old Timer, Ben Walkington, passed away this week. We remember Ben as a neighbor way back in our pony days on . the farm. Most of all we remember him as being friendly to us as a kid. Kids do grow up and do remember. Dkk's Barber Shop MOVED TO NEW LOCATION 2209 WEST JOHNSBURG RD. 2 doors East of Heilermann's Tavern Johnsburg PHONE 385-6218 /our Ticket To Spring And Summer Fun! CHICAGO NATIONAL Dickinson 20. Denny Desmond one of the conference scoring leaders contributed 12 points. Warriors Lose to N. Chicago Rufus Woods and his North Chicago teammates wasted little time in showing the Warriors they meant business. During the first half, Woods made every type of shot possible. He tipped points in under the basket, he was deadly on his short jumps in the lane, and didn't even miss when he shot from fifteen to twenty feet out. In fact he was so hot he netted 22 points the first half - the same number of points chalked up by the Warriors during the first two periods . While Woods was having a hayday, McHenry couldn't do anything right. Not only were the Warriors cold, they often threw the ball away before getting a shot. In the first quarter, McHenry netted only 7 points, compared to 19 for North Chicago. From the first quarter on McHenry was not in the game and couldn't seem to jell all evening. Evans was the Warrior's most potent threat as he tossed in 14 points. Tom was closely followed by Rich Soda who had 12 points and Paul Kilday who had 10. Woods started the game as the conference scoring leader. Rufus added to his lead by tossing in 29 points. 22 the first half. Sims followed in scoring with 16 points. However, North Chicago's victory was not totally an offensive one. They constantly pressed the Warriors nnd caused McHenry to lose the ball often. This defensive strategy coupled with their potent offense gave the War Hawks the lopsided victory. At the 1966 National Western Stock Show, Quarter Horse division, in Denver Cojiseum, Denver, Colo., Melinda Mass won first place in the College Girls Equitation wesj. tern equipment. Melinda also tied for fourth place with the same mare in the Junior Reining class, which is for horses 4 years old and younger and in which the horses work individually following a pattern established by the American Quarter Horse association. Miss Mass also won first place in the Girls' Horsemanship class at the International Stock Show and Quarter Horse-'show that was held in Chicago in November. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H.
