McHenry Unit 491 of the American Legion auxiliary honored their members at a dinner Feb. 19. The dinner was prepared and served by the members of the post. Chief cook Bernard Matchen was assisted in the kitchen by Commander A1 Bianchi, Roy Homo, Francis Pickett, Harry Lock, Lloyd Scharf, Ed Reid, Tim McCormick, Ed Brut, Shorty Mueller and Senior Vice Commander Frank Ficek. The auxiliary is sincerely grateful for the wonderful meal and superb service. President of McHenry Unit 491 Bobbie Carroll introduced our honored guests. They each, in turn, expressed their thanks for the dinner nnd gifts presented by our Unit. Mrs Chesak spoke of the various auxiliary programs and urged our continuous cooperation. These girls all have over ten years' service with the auxiliary. After the dinner, introductions of distinguished guests and presenting of awards, the men joined the auxiliary in a pleasant evening of dancing to a local popular orchestra. AFS MARDI GRAS BALL SCHEDULED THIS SATURDAY Reservations lor the AFS (American Field Service) Mardi Gras ball are coming in from other towns. The ball is sponsored by the AFS Community committee and will be held Saturday Feb. 26, at the VFW hall in Woodstock.sCrysilal Lake and McHenry will be represented. International dishes will be featured in the smorgasbord that will be served from 7 to 9 p.m. A flowing punch bowl will be a feature-. Miss Judy Regner, faculty sponsor for the AFS club at Woodstock high school, together with the ctficers and members of the club will decorate the hall with gay posters of foreign countries, streamers and the American flag' will be prominent on each table.' A shower ol balloons will be released at 11:30 after, the announcement of the prize winning costumes. Judging of the costumes will be done at 9:30 by Jack Satorius and his commit:ee of Gladys Gruszczvnski and Dorothy Mc- Eachrcn of the Adult AFS club. It is hoped there will be many entries in the categories of bist representation of a country, prettiest and funniest to make the work of the judges that much more difficult. An honored guest will be Honorable Robert McClory, who has had a loijg and great interest in the AFS and foreign student exchange program. Currently he is the US delegate to the Inter- Parliamentary union which represents seventy-live parliament.-, and organizations. He serves on the Cultural and Education committee which concerns itself with literacy and student exchange programs. He recently attended a meeting of UNESCO in Paris, studying the subject of student exchange as well as application of science to the program. As a young man he was a student and teacher in Switzerland in the part of the country adjacent 'to France and is fluent in the French language. Two of his three children received part of their high school and one, his college education, in Switzerland and he has a married daughter living in Switzerland. He therefore knows at first hand the great good that comes from interchange of students. Invitations" were sent to the AFS Area host families and their student guests, to chapter presidents and to high school faculty members, also to friends of the adult chapter who they thought might be interested in furthering the program of AFS. Community Methodist church will present J. David McCartney at their annual spring tea on Wednesday, March 2, at 1 p.m. at the V.F.W. hall. Mr. McCartney, who has chosen (IK subject "Potpourri"' for this occasion, resides in Long Grove. 111., is married and has three children. He was born in Louisiana: received his B.'A. degree at Lake Forest college and his Master's at the University ; of Arkansas. He has had extended studies at the University of Mississippi and Norths western university. He w as Director of the Arden Shores Home and School for Gifted Boys in Lake Bluff for three and a half years. Mr. McCartney-- has been affiliated with School District 125 for eight years. He is presently director of the guidance and counseling program at the new Adlai Stevenson high school in that district. He is active with the Mental Health board of Lake County and on the Lake County Civic committee. Mr. McCartney is listed with a speaker's bureau and speaks before many political groups, charity groups, as well as at church and school affairs. He has appeared on the Jack Eigen and Tony Weitsel shows. Appearing in amateur drama, as an actor who can also sing, is one. of his secret avocations. Mrs. Harry Hans, chairman of the tea, states that tickets may be purchased from members of the Women's society or at the door. LOCAL ACTRESSES WILL PRESENT GUILD PROGRAM ON DEAN'S LIST Jim Benson, a sophomore student at the University of Illinois, has been placed on the dean's list with a 4.5 average for the semester. He is a member of Lambda Cia Alpha fraternity. JOINS HONOR SOCIETY Sandy L. Spohr of McHenry recently was initiated into Eta Sigma Phi, national classics honor society at Marquette university. Milwaukee. Miss Spohr is a junior in the college of liberal arts. Picture Tour Entertained By Following the monthly business meeting of Joyce Kilmer Court. No. 573, Catholic Daughters of America, members present were entertained by a colorful tour through many countries in Europe, via pictures shown, and very ably presented and narrated bv Miss Virginia Williams of McHenry. Many interesting pictures were shown and attention was drawn to the great difference in architectural structure, of the numerous churches in comparison to'those in this country. The beautiful formal flower gardens of Lourdes, France, were shown as well as the colorful pictures of Paris, Brussels, Madrid and Rome. The ancient Coliseum at Rhone Valley, Nimes, France, which dates back to B.C., also was shown. This Coliseum is still in use, on occasions, for festivals and plays. The evening was concluded with lunch served by the committee of the evening. Maxwell J. Kelly, well-known Carpentersville director, will evolve a theatrical explanation of the myriad relationships between one woman and another in the presentation, 'The Catherine Wheel of Worhen,' on Thursday morning, Feb. 24, at 10 o'clock in the Woodstock Opera House. For this Creative Living program sonnsored by the Women's Guild of the Woodstock Fine Arts association, attention will be focused upon the four local professional actresses who will present the dramatic interpretations of literary women from Giradoux to Oscar Wilde. The actresses are Esther Pantages Stewart, executive director of the association; Doris Kelly, wife of Max Kelly and prominent in Carpentersville's experimental Theatre Workshop; Theresa Hobart, who has made her 12-foot dancing giraffe an endeared animal to children's audiences thruout the area; and Delores Daily also of Theatre Workshop.
