Thursday, March 3,1966 @JUvml THE MCHENBYJPLATNDEAT.ER There's more beauty to be had from cosmetics than most women get! These tricks will help; Keep your loose powder in a shaker, (Glass spice jars with perforated tops are fine.) Loose powder1 stays fluffy and gives a super translucent sheen! Shake powder onto a fresh tuft of cotton, lightly dusting the fa<je. Remove excess with quick downward strokes. Frir luminous color that appears to spring from within, use two shades of lipstick and an overcoat of gloss . . . a pale shade over a medium tone, both in the same color family. Use lipsticks with a high degree of transparency and slip. (Opaque pigment and waxy textures, won't work.) If the lipstick makes a habit of running into the little grooves above the lipline, brush on a "stop-sign" by dipping a clean lipstick brush into skin astringent and ringing lips where the color ends. Use a wide artist's brush to apply dry rouge, you'll get a lovely blush! One square slice of bread makes eight triangular CANAPES with four cuts; two cuts across, two diagonal cuts. Before cutting, spread each large slice with different cocktail spreads. Top each triangle with olive, caviar, pimiento or any choice of tasty ornamentation, for a trayful of elegant * canapes! Make that white layer cake extra "yummy special" by filling it with chocolate frosting lo which a little ram has been added . . . frost the top and sides with more of the same! YOur portable sewing machine or typewriter will be very comfortable to use, on HISTORICAL GROUP DISPLAYS COPIES OF EARLY MAPS The McHenry County Historical society is now in possession of photostat copies of an early map pertaining to the county. This- has been purchased from the files of the Library of Congress and will be available for anyone interested in seeing it. It is entitled "The Tourist's Pocket Map of the State of Illinois, Exhibiting Its Internal Improvements". It was published in Philadelphia in 1835. At one side it lists the counties and their population but McHenry county is not listed as it was not yet formed. At the other side it lists the steamboat schedules on the Mississippi, up to Galena and down to New Orleans. An enlargement made of the upper portion of the map shows the present McHenry and Lake counties but in this map the areas are marked "Attached to LaSalle County ' and "Attached to Cook County". The map shows the courses of the Fox, Des Plaines, Rock, Turtle and the Kishwaukee or Sycamore rivers. It also designates "ancient mounds" on the Fox river at what appears to be the southern boundary of the present McHenry county. / • YMCA FINANCE Contributions to the Lake Region YMCA finance campaign reached 23 percent of the $19,- 980 goal at the first report meeting. Special Gifts division reported 30 percent accomplishment, with several large contributions pledged but not yet in. Contributors this year have the satisfaction of observing the doubling of program participation and membership during 1965. Over 2,400 families and individuals have expressed support for the Lake Region YMCA and 92 workers are attempting to visit over 1,000 of. these to obtain their financial contribution- to carry the program forward through further expansion. President Alfred Seiling has pointed out that "only by continued support during the growth stages can we expect confidently to build a YMCA, both in program and edifice. MAJOR EFFORT URGED TO AID i COUNTY RETARDED All citizens of McHenry county are urged to take part in a m^jor effort to raise funds for the McHenry County Association for Ketarded Children. The Woodstock Moose Lodge is showing the way for the fifth year, sponsoring a dance and auction on Saturday night, March 19, that will generate income for the organization. The McHenry County Association for Retarded Children was started in 1959 by the Wonder Lake Kiwanis club. They started a school for children 6-21 years of age who were considered neither trainable nor educable. The school was chartered in 1 9 5 9 a n d t h e a s s o c i a t i o n h a s been supported by contributions from civic organizations and private citizens. Many have left to attend trainable schools, where teachers in special education are able to help them advance in their education. In March, 1965, a sheltered workshop program was added for children 16 and older. Its purpose is to help them become more useful citizens, explains Mrs. Edward Blakslee, Crystal Lake, president. Small projects are worked in the shop and the children receive a nominal pay. WAR ON WEBWORMS Research on sod webworms by entomologists of the Illinois Natural History Survey may solve lawn problems. In recent years the webworm has become the most abundant and destructive lawn insect in Illinois and an annual plague of homeowners. One observation that the entomologists believe may surprise many homeowners is that well-watered and neatly maintained bluegrass lawns are the most likely to be damaged. To the consternation of the man who takes pride in his lawn, his more careless neighbor may have no webworm problem at all. Tests show that diazinon and carbaryl, relatively safe insecticides for homeowners to use, will control this lawn pest. ^ Shop in fSammomm today! Dennis Conway 3S15 W.
