By: Earl Walsh It was good to get a call from o u r l o n g t i m e f r i e n d , L l o y d Freund, and good to get in a sandy time 1:42 pm wed . . . . little baseball talk. The days are getting longer, the sun higher and the boys are thinking about the coming baseball season. There will be a meeting at Lloyd's home March 15th to get plans moving for a successful C o u n t y L e a g u e s e a s o n . T h e league needs more, teams to make good schedule and create additional interest. Any city, village or town or any organizat i o n i n t e r e s t e d i n b a c k i n g a team should call Lloyd -- 385- 1794. It seems to u§ that with so much effort put forth to develop players in Little League, Pony League and American Legion b a s e b a l l t h a t m a n y p l a y e r s would want to play on a County League team. While plans must start right now for baseball, there is a lot of bouncing to be done on the basketball floors before a state champion is crowned. We have that now famous Forester state basketball tournaplaying' golf in St. Louis these McHenry. Fred Meyer says this is his 20th and last year as chairman o f t h e F o r e s t e r t o u r n e y . F r e d put a lot of dash in this annual event and won't be easily replaced. The first round, played last Sunday, took some of the weaker teams out of the meet. Of course, some good teams also fall by the wayside in each round, but the competition gets tougher each week. See as many games as you can next Sunday, then be sure to keep the following Sunday, March 13, open. That will be a big day. We hope our feathered friends take care of the mosquitos next summer as well as they cleaned up that food we put out for them" all winter. The sparrows are still with us, but some of the fancy colored birds have left us. That's gratitude! Don Howard says they are playing golfin St. Louis these days and why don't we go down there. For a ride in a cart? What looks good to us is some literature from the White Sox showing rates for a trip to Sarasota. Just as soon as we catch up to Social Security and Medicare away we go! EM JOY OUTIHGS OVER WEEKEND Winter and summer were brought back-to-back this past weekend by two youth groups from Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran chun.li. On the summer side, seventh and eighth graders from the confirmation class invited a few of their friends and hid a swimming party in Fox Lake Saturday. As if to prove there are still a few weeks of winter left, the Luther Lraguers took some guests to Twin Lakes, Wis. Sunday, to enjoy the tobog^-in Doing hostess duty for the confirmation class were Mrs. George Kan^ierer. Mrs. Ray Roadman and Mrs. Donald Johnson. Luther Leaguers were served by Mrs. Carlton Bye. Charlene Bye and Frances Klontz. About twenty-five young people enjoyed themselves on each occasion. PI ALOES Have you noticed the increased large number of well built boys around McHenry lately? Chances are that it might be due to the new weightlifting program that the high school is conducting after school. A prog r a m has been designed by C o a c h e s D e a n H i r g i s , J o h n Mesching and Bud Murray to improve the strength, agility, and coordination of the athletes of the school. The school has purchased several hundred pounds of weight, a power rack, and isometric rack, and a bench which are used in two different small crowded room s, five days a week. The boys are divided up according to their abili'y and work anywhere from two to five days a week in an effort to improve themselves and thus help imp r o v e M c H e n r y ' s a t h l e t i c teams. There are approximately 50 boys working in the program and t h e y rcpre ent athletes from all of the sports. There arc a l 'i/e number of boys who are wanting to get into the program, b.ut because of crowded conditions are not able to. It is hoped that running the program five days a week and dividing un into two areas that as many boys as possible can p a r t a k e i n l h " p r o g r a m . It is hoped that the interest in the program will continue to build and that the boys will continue on with the work during the summer months and that the results will be shown on the fields, courts, tracks and mats as McHonry returns to the top of the conference. TOM EVANS SCORES 14 The Warriors took it on the chin Friday night when they were soundly dumped by Barrington 92-45. From the ^games beginning, McHenry started throwing bad passes and allowed Barrington to score on simple layups. It was the Warrior's last conference game and now the Warriors must prepare for Regional play. Coach Anderson played most of his squad to assure that some of the Juniors got Varsity experience. Leading Mc- Henry's attack was Tom Evans. Tom dumped in 14 points and displayed goqd outside shooting. Paul Kilday netted 12 points for the Warriors and was followed • by Carstens with 6. Bajrington's Bergbom displayed excellent touch under the basket. „ He led all scoring with 25 points. Hopkins sank 18 and Brodhay contributed 14 for Barrington. Except for the first quarter, Barrington doubled the score on McHenry every period. The most productive period for the winners was the last when they rolled up 34 points. f Barrington (92) fg ft pf Hopkins 8 2 3 Cruttenden 0 0 1 Bergbom 11 3 0 McMillan 3 6 1 Justis -210 Wallack 0 2 2 Van Wambeke 3 11 Schumacher 2 13 Trebing 10 0 Brodhay 8 2 2 Cowell 10 1 Totals McHenry (45) Reinboldt Harrison Kambananta 37 18 14 fg ft pf 0 11 0 0 2 3 0 2 Fr@§hm@m lister T@wnaim®m,u' At Barrington H.S. The Blades finished the season in second place with a 9-3-2 record. It would be possible, however, for the Blades to finish in a first place tie if the Highland Park Kodaks lose two oFTtheir final three remaining games. Each team scored twice in the first period. The Streaks managed to open the scoring with the only type of goals they were able to get all night, on a rebound shot. Rich Albright scored the fiTst goal for the Blades with an assist from Dave Zieger. The Streaks went out ahead 2-1, but the game was promptly tied up when Mike Mecko blasted in a slap shot from 20 feet out. The Streaks took a 3-2 lead in the second period, scoring on a scramble in front of the Blades net. Ray Simon tied the score on a beautiful bit of offensive work. Ray scrapped for the puck until he gained possession and then fired in a wrist shot from 15 out, the scoring in the period coming to an end. Mike Mecko put in the final goal of the season for the Blades on a quick backhander. He was, assisted by Zeiger and Albright. The roof then fell in on the Blades as the Streaks scored 3 to close out the scoring in the 3rd period. Goalie Jim Herman made a total of 25 saves in the game. It is interesting to note that Herman was the only goalie in the league to play in every minute of his team's 14 games. The Blades shall play again in the league playoffs beginning on March 13. In the playoffs, the first place team takes on the third and the second takes on the fourth in a best of three game semi - final series. The winners of the semi - finals shall meet in a best of ^hree final series to determine the play - off champion. Game times and additional information will be published later. RETURN VERDICT A second suit resulting from a traffice accident in 1961 brought the same verdict of week. The Bellow Construction Co., Inc., and Ray Bellow were found not guilty in a personal injury suit brought by Earl Osmon individually and on behalf of his daughter, Judy Osmon. The accident involved Bellov^, driving a company truck, and Judy Osmon, riding her bike. The second trial last week was held after the appellate court reversed the first "not guilty" verdict. In the first quarter the Irish took a 10-6 lead. Then, in the second stanza, the Irish held St. Anne's to 4 points and led the Barrington team 21-10 at half. The third period was another good one for the Irish. They outscored St. Anne's 11-4. The final period was even better for the Irish as they increased their lead and gained. their 13th conference victory. On Sunday the Irish traveled to Elgin and played St. John's of Johnsburg. The Irish won in overtime 32-29. The victory allowed them to play St. Charles for the Diocesan tournament championship. St. Charles turned out to be too much for the Irish and took first place.
