Until just recently, the voiture also was much involved in a child welfare program which assisted the cTiilclren's Immo in Woodstock. These programs are just part of the activities and functions of "The Little Voiture with a big heart". La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chcvau,x is an honor society of veterans, and is com|>osed of dedicated members of the American Legion. Membership in the organization cannot be requested. It is' selected from within posts in the county that have members who are outstanding in service to their community, state and nation, and are selected and recommended by no less than four members of the voiture. Unlike other organizations, membership can be terminated by the voiture if any member fails to meet the specifications by becoming inactive either in the voiture or in the American Legion without just cause. At the throttle this year of Voiture 578 is. A. J. "Tony" Kin hberg of Crystal Lake, with George Mracheck. of McHenry backing him up as second in command, this is a most busy time of the year for the voiutre with special district meetings and preparing delegates for the state and national conventions. Another one of the most important functions of the voiture is the Locomotive, which many of the children of the cpunty had a Chance to ride. This part of the organization is headed by H. D. Vycital, Sr., of Mc- Cullom Lake. Many hours of H. D. Vycital's time is spent keeping the locomotive in tiptop shape, so that it can take part in the many parades throughout the state. The 40 et 8 is called the "playground of the American Legion", but is also the organ-1 ization of hard working, community minded citizens. Not one penny is used from fund raising functions for any part of the operation of the organization. All is spent on the program. and for the good of the community. McHenry Shoo in Now In Stock! Feb. 17, Kenneth Fiske rej)- resenled this district, on the Metropolitan Area Conservation District council. This is an advisory group com posed, of directors from eai h district board to formulate plans and" coordiivte efforts in the solu- 'ion of problems relating to the planning and development of resources in the Chicagoland area. The district, in cooperation with other conservation districts in the area, is providing financial support and attendants at a conservation exhibit at the World Flower and Garden Show in McCormick Place, March 15) through the 27. Louis Engelbrecht read a letter from _ Ralph Hay, agricultural engineer of the University of Illinois, suggesting the board meet with land improvement and excavation contractors to explain how they can m'-re effectively carry out conservation specifications. Engelbrecht suggested their operators be invited also. Don, Barrett, vo-ag teacher in Harvard, has been invited to the April 5 board meeting \o discuss ways the district and tiles, Future Farmers of America can work together to promote soil and water conservation in the area. Nineteen cooperators are planning to plant 243,000 trees and :;f).000 multiflora rose and bush honeysuckle this spring. Wildlife packets and tree seedling orders are still being accepted by the state nursery. Tree planting service is available and being offered on the same basis as in previous years by the McHenry County Soil and Water Conservation district. FOOD FOR RABBITS \ Contrary to popularx opinion, bluegrass is not an excellent food for rabbits. In fact, Illinois Natural History Survey researchers, in exploratory feeding experiments, have discovered that bluegrass is almost worthless to young cottontails in midsummer. Young rabbits fed bluegrass lived only a day or two, no longer than those without food. Prickly lettuce, chicory and closely related plants such as fleabane and aster, which may also be nutritious rabbit foods, are among the first plants to grow on cultivated land turned back to, the wild. Such leafy vegetation offers rabbits good coyer plus nutrition, but it is gradually being replaced by perennial grasses. Valiant Viscounts Kevin Cary, 15, of 1715 W.
