This will cover a 20 year period of stars. We wouldn't want the job of selecting those Stars. After all, Johnsburg and McHenry could place a flock of great players on the team while room must be made for the great favorites from other parts of the state. We know there were great ones from various sections. It is simply that the home stars are in our eyes. There will be some good games next Sunday as the tourney comes to the end., A schedule appears on your sport page. Rinqwood Second In YMCA iiapp "" -ei fi fCIAL PROGRAM FOR FINAIS : FORESTER CAGE TOURNEY COMING SUNDAY AFTERNOON VS. VS. VS. We expect to see Fred Meyer and his many committee faithfuls go all out for a big day of entertainment. It is a bit ahead of St. Patrick's Day this year, but look for some of the "Micks" to appear wearin' the green. Drop in at the MCHS gym any time from noon on through the afternoon, but be sure to be on hand for the finish. The games will be thrilling, the entertainment is billed as fabulous, and the sight of the All-Stars should be heart warming. Louie and Eleanore Young (one of the Walsh girls, you know) sent a card from sunny California. They give a Chamber of Commerce plug for the weather out there. But, if you think they went way out there for the climate, you haven't seen pictures of their grand children. Just finished reading the card from the Walsh girl who changed her name to Young when another card came from a Schmitt girl who changed to Kelley. Here's what the Kelleys write from Hawaii (and thanks for writing): "Aloha! Read Plaindealer all the time and just thought I'd let you know the sun shines in the Pacific too not just in the south. Weather here is beautiful, beats Fla.! My folks - Joe "The janitor" Schmitts will come visit us soon - must send Aloha to all - Joanne Schmitt Kelley P.S. Give my regards to Miss Froehlich." Paul Morenz did it again! You must have read how he sank a basket with 11 seconds to go to give Wisconsin a 1- point win over Purdue. Makes us McHenryites feel real proud. This is the time of the year a fellow would like to take off his snow tires, then suddenly remembers days gone by when he took off his long drawers too soon and a big blizzard came along. We hear all those ads about sleeping pills, but won't need them as long as our big chair and newspaper serve the same purpose. The papers are spreading a lot of ink about Harvard High's basketball team since their boys beat Elgin to win the regional title. Reports have it that the Harvard players made 48 per cent of their shots this season. The going really gets rough this week, but we wish them luck. The C.O.F. Tournament finals will be held Sunday, March 13th. Champions in five divisions will be crowned; Schedule for Sunday Championship Games: 12:00 Noon, McHem Johnsburg, 6th Grade; 12:45 P.M., Johnsburg Aurora, 8th Grade; 1:30 P.M., St. Gregory Aurora, gangers; 2:30 P.M., McHenry vs. Mo- 'line, Seniors; 3:30 P.M., Moline vs. Johnsburg, Heavies. All teams look like they are well matched so you should see some close games. At 4:30-p.m. the fabulous Fire Ball "8" will perform after which the 20 year-15 man "Hall of Fame" team will be introduced. The climax of the evening will be the awarding of trophies to 1st and 2nd place teams. Jim Colandren was absent when the picture was taken. The team was coached by Arnold Harvey. The McHenry Warriors played their last, game of the season last Wed. as they lost in the first game of regional play. Elgin nipped McHenry 60 - 59 in overtime. After the victory over our Warriors, the Maroons squeeked by the Blue Streaks of Woodstock and then went on to lose in the championship game to Harvard. According to coach Anderson, the Warriors played one of their finest games against Elgin. The contest was an exciting one from the start but the real thrills came at the end of regulation play. Pat Camasta sank a 13 footer with 21 seconds to go and sent the game into overtime. The Warriors outscored Elgin in the first period by a point. Throughout most of the game McHenry kept Elgin from getting a good drive going and outplayed their taller YMCA St< IfS St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Crystal Lake and St. Thomas Catholic church were winners of first place in the Lake Region YMCA church basketball leagues. St. Paul's finished the season with a record of seven wins and one- loss for first place in the boys league while St. Thomas had a record of six wins and two losses in winning the men's league. The final boys league standings found Ringwood Methodist second with a record of six wins and two losses. McHenry Methodist church was third with five wins and three losses. St. Barnahus Lutheran won two games andW^st six for fourth place. Filth place went to Cary Methodist with eight losses. The final men's league standings found Crystal Lake Methodist iri second place with six wins and three losses. Fox River Grove Methodist won five and Inst four for third place. Fourth place was taken by McHenry Baptist with eight losses. opponents. McHenry lost its point advantage in the second quarter as they were outscored 18 - 17. The third period was close throughout. Neither team could pull away and no more than three points separated them at any time. However, just before the period ended, Elgin gained a lead of three points and Started the final stanza with this margin. For a while it appeared as though Elgin would pull the game out in easy fashion as they worked to a six points lead. However, the Warriors hustled -back and Rich Soda tied the score at 3:14. McHenry jumped into the lead during the overtime, 'but Elgin was too* much for them and outscored our Warriors 7 - 6 in the extra period for the win. McHenry's leading scorer was junior Tom Evans. Tom sank 16 points. He was followed by Soda and Camasta, each netting 10 points. John Reinboldt scored 7 for the Warriors. McHenry didn't hit very well from either the field or the line. The Warriors sank 21 of 61 attempts from the field for a .344 average and hit 17 of 31 charity tosses for a .548 clip. The Warriors finished in last place in conference play. However, coach Anderson does not believe the team is as poor as the record indicates. Many games were very close and could have ended with McHenry on top. Perhaps next year will give some oi the returning players a chance to revenge their opponents. It is interesting to note that the Blades were one of the two teams in the league to stay with their original roster throughout the season. All of the other teams got outside help from older, more experienced players. Many of the teams drafted services of Canadian players to help their cause. Much credit must be given to the Blades for their fine effort and second place showing. The first place team, trie Highland Park Kodaks, is a group of older players who have been playing together far the past five seasons. Northern Mini Bowmen News Twenty-five brave club members and their guests came out to shoot the range Sunday for the first monthly club shoot of the year. Although the weather was rather chilly and windy, hot coffee and a campfire kept things toasty, enough for the hardy ones attending. In fact John Zawaski was hot enough to get a "20 Pin" for a perfee tscore on a 45 yard walkup shot, a neat job of shooting under any circumstances. First place in the men's division was won by Nels Gustafson, second by Joe Giliberto and third by John Giliberto. First place in the woman's was won by Jean Bird. Next Sunday, March 13, is the date for our first Invitational of the year. Aptly called "The Slush Shoot", it always provides a lot of fun for those with a desire to shoot, and a pair of boots! Hot food and coffee will be available, and there will be awards in all classes for the winners of the day. Anyone interested in archery is invited to attend any of our invitational shoots, or our monthly club shoots, which are held on the first Sunday of each month. Our Range is located Ms mile south of Rt. 120 on Draper Road. The next club meeting will he March 17-at 8 p.m. at the American Legion hall in McHenry. Badgers Honor Senior At Annual Basketball Dinner Paul Morenz, Wisconsin reserve guard from McHenry, who specializes in resfcue roles, was voted the Badgers' most valuable player at the annual night, March 8. Morenz, 6-foot senior, was called up from the bench to pull out one-point victories over Iowa, Marquette and Purdue this season and over Boston college by the same margin last year. His most recent heroics occurred last Saturday when he whipped in a 20-foot shot from the sidelines with 11 seconds left to beat Purdue, 69 to 68. His three year total was only 246 points in 51 games--but he delivered at critical times. Paul graduated from McHenry High School in 1962 and is now majoring in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Gene Morenz, 4306 W. Ponca, McHenry. Ernie Terrell would have to go out in back of the barn to hold their fight until Toronto agreed to set up a ring for them. More Morenz. At this point we learn that Paul Morenz was chosen most valuable player on the Badger basketball squad. He certainly was the cool one in winning those tight games. It is a fine honor. We join in congratulations. Junior Freund called to inquire about the White Sox. .You don't suppose he is thinking of switching over to our side, do you? A. has come along very well in two years. At first teams were not too well organized and the league was rather taken over and dominated by o n e o r t w o t e a m s . T o d a y though, at least four teams are in contention for the play-off championship. Practice sessions are held continuously in other gyms or at home. Teams all want first place so an I. B. A- champs emblem can be placed on their jackets. One problem that still faces I. B. A. is the officials. We need interested people, even adults, to officiate the gaYnes. On a whole, the officials do their best, many times risking life or limb to call a foul. The play-offs started Monday at 3:30 and at 4:30. Games will be played throughout this week until a champ is crowned. I. B. A. is now a fixed league in school; and through the continued cooperation of players, captains, officials, and Mr. &uda, I. B. A. can stay and keep growing in popularity.
