"ST PULSE RECEIVES AWARD James K. Reid of McHenry recently received a Postal Merit Certificate and cash award from Stanley S. Rakowski, operations manager of North Suburban postal facility in Franklin Park, where Mr. Reid is employed. Mr. Reid earned the award ;by suggesting and installing a new system of bumper guards in the facility's truck-loading dock area. The guard rails under the loading boys were frequently becoming caught under the tailgates of vehicles, causing damage and hazards to personnel trying to extricate the bumpers. Mr. Reid proposed ai method of installing some discarded guard rails over and above the old rails. With Operations Manager Rakowski's consent, and using discarded material and personal or available tools, Mr. Reid installed the new bumper system in twelve working hours, correcting a dangerous situation at no additional cost to the government. In presenting the award, Mr. Rakowski commended Reid for his initiative, ingenuity and mechanical skill. The job was outside the scope of Mr. Reid's regular work' as postal clerk. y (The Plaindealer invites the public to use this column as an expression of their views oh subjects of general interest in our community. TRAIN SERVICE "Fellow Commuters, Shoppers, etc.: "In the past eighteen years I have heard many discussions on the train service, (or lack oif it) to McHenry. At the present time you must be a 9 to 5 worker to derive any benefits from our two-traindaily system. You have two other alternatives, go to Crystal Lake, with approximately twenty trains daily, or to Fox Lake and ride on the Milwaukee road line. "Several of the riders mentioned how many times they Schneider in 1937 and a brother, Earl, in 1963. The only survivor is a sister-in-law, Alvera Gorman, of Woodstock. Mr. Reid lives at 3002 Victoria avenue, with his wife, Bernice, daughter Gayle, and son, Kenneth. Another son, Glen, is in the Air Force. NAMED TO POST The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America has announced the appointment of Dale D. Koss as field representative in the Cook county area. Dale is a graduate of University Hospital, Madison, Wis., where he majored in Xray technology. He is married to the former Lois E. Miller. Mr. and Mrs. Dale D. Koss reside at 4105 W. Crestwood, McHenry. have had tti refuse over-time simply Nbecause their automobile was parked in the lot at McHenry. If they would work they would have to catch a late train to Crystal Lake and then a taxicab to , McHenry to pick up their car. This added expense hardly makes it worthwhile putting in the extra time. In many instances this extra revenue^ could more than pay the monthly ride fare. "I volunteered to write this letter to the Public Pulse and forward any response to Mr. Ben Heineman, president of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway, to see if some action might be taken to increase our daily service with the addition of an early-morning and late-evening train, (at least on a trial basis). "It would be most interesting to discover how many residents of McCullom Lake, Wonder Lake, Richmond, Spring Grove, Griswold Lake, Lakemoor, Johnsburg and other area communities would avail themselves of this service instead of driving the extra miles they are at this time? "The population increase in the McHenry area is one of the greatest in the state and this growth is expected to continue for many years to come. We believe the trend will be moving in favor of commuting each year, but only if the conveniences warrant it practicable. All persons affected by such a proposed change are urged to drop a postcard or letter in the mail to be passed on to the Railway. "Perhaips what we ask is not possible or feasible but. it will surely do no harm to let the Railway know how many residents are concerned about more frequent service to McHenry. Suggested departure time 6 a.m. from McHenry and 8 p.m. from Chicago. "We welcome any response to our plea from Mr. Heineman or officials of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway for publication.
