SERVICE OF THE miMSW STMEiiapLSOCIETf "DRY AIR~ CAN INVITE HEALTH PROBLEMS If you're a frequent victim of dry nose, scratchy throat, or recurrent colds, the solution to your problem may be no further away than your heating system. Central heating units in homes frequently bake inside air to tinder-dryness, reducing to absolute zero....and inviting a number of health problems. For example: ' Dry air increases your chance of getting a cold by drying., out the moist secretions in your nose and throat -- secretions which protect your body from invasion of infectious germs. And if you already have a cold, the dry atmosphere may prolong it by preventing the production of additional secretions needed to provide a protective coating of the infected area and wash away infectious germs. Result? Your nose and throat remain congested" and susceptible to reinfection. All overly-dry rooms can also add discomfort to people with asthma or chronic respiratory diseases, irritate certain conditions of the skin, and produce a dry, itchy nose and throat. Dry air can also produce those electric shocks you experience after walking across a carpet. When the humidity is high, the static electricity is grounded as it forms. When it is low, however, the static is not grounded but rather discharged against the object you touch. How can you prevent "dry heat?" The most effective way is with a commercial humidifying unit that attaches to your furnace blower and controls the, relative humidity throughout your entire home. Humidifiers are regulated by the outside temperature according to safe relative humidity levels established by the.National Warm Air Heating and Air Conditioning Association. If you don't wish to install a humidifier, small room steamers or even water boiled on The Drivers Seal More than half the drivers involved in fatal automobile cpllisipns • may be mentally unbalanced, according to research conducted by a University of Michigan psychiatrist. Dr. Melvin L. Selzer, asso-, ciate professor of psychiatry at the university's medical school, organized the research effort, which consisted of intensive interviews of drivers' friends, family, employers, physicians and others. The study, still under way, shows that at least 58 per cent of the drivers suffered classifiable psychiatric illness. An even larger portion of drivers in fatal crashes were involved in a "serious personal crisis" such as intense job pressures, marital difficulties or financial problems at the time of the accident. Dr. Selzer described himself as "a little surprised" to find the rate of mental illness running so high among drivers in fatal crashes. He says that the findings based on seventy-two cases in Michigan would probably "be the same anywhere." Of the drivers analyzed so far in the continuing study, forty-two were mentally ill, including twenty-nine confirmed alcoholics. In all, thirty-two of the fatal crash drivers were alcoholics. Dr. Selzer says that the slightly intoxicated social drinker is not nearly as important a factor in highway accidents as the chronic alco holic. In an earlier study, Dr. Selzer and another research foiiht? suicidal tendencies had a record of twice as many accidentfl as non-suicidal patients. In that study, it was noted that: "The automobile lends itself admirably to attempts at selfdestruction because of the frequency of its use, the generally accepted inherent hazards of driving, and the fact that it offers the individual an opportunity to imperil or end his life without consciously confronting himself with his suicidal intent." Better keep an eye on those other drivers! Have you checked the serial number tag on the doorframe of your car lately?
