APRIL 8-9-10-11 Show Starts 7 p.m. Cubs-Sox To Each Sponsor 100 Recruits The Navy Recruiting Service in Chicago announced today that the White Sox and Cubs b a s e b a l l o r g a n i z a t i o n s w i l l each sponsor a special Navy recruit company this year. Both the "Cubs" and "Sox" companies will consist of 100 reqfruits each and will be sworn into the Navy as a part of the pre-game ceremonies at Wrigley Field on June 25 and at Sox Park in Chicago^ bn July 16. Commander W. E. Copeland, commanding officer of the Navy's Chicago Recruiting District said that the young men enlisting in these two special companies will go through their nine week "boot" training at Great Lakes, ill., as special units carrying the Cubs and Sox colors as they compete with young men from all over the country for trophies and awards which are made for the various aspects of the "boot training. Copeland said that in line with the Navy's current emphasis on quality recruitment only High School graduates and the very finest young men available will be enlisted ill these special companies. White Sox,-- General Manger Ed Short remembered that the SOx had /sponsored a similar company in 1962 and that the recruit '"Sox" had picked up just about all the honors as they werit through training that year. With an eye on the north side entry, he predicted that the 1966-team of Navy recruits would fare even better. John Holland, General Manager of the Cubs, said that he was pleased to lend the Cub's name to young men volunteering for their country's service in the U.S. Navy and offered the opinion that the recruit "Sox" were in for some tough competition. Th6 ;• management of both clubs Stated that relatives of the young men enlisting would be admitted to the ball park as guests on the date of the ceremony. SODA AND EVANS GIVEN HONORABLE MENTION BY WKRS Rich Soda and Tom Evans received honorable mention in the secbnd WKRS area prep basketball rating. Rich, a senior, finished high in the conference scoring race this year. Tom, a junior was the Warrior playmaker and will see a lot of actidn next year. Chris Newkirk jllsit 1966 sad Ghria- Newkirk, a sophomore at the l|myersity of, Illinois, is on the 19k6- Varsity golf squad. Chris, is the son of Mr. and Mjfs., Robert Newkirk of Crestwood Drivd. This year's golf squad will consist of only sophomores and juniors. With a good showing, Chris could play an important part in the team's success. In McHenry ?0 I HEAR .; £ By: Earl Walsh Our White Sox have just lost two games in a row. The way they were going, it didn't seem they would lose that many all season. That will be enough of that stuff, Mr. Stanky! „ Haye seen more golf balls than baseballs flying through the air in this early spring. Those golf bugs can't wait. Anybody for a game of marbles? Seemed like an epidemic as we met four cars in two weeks at Green and Elm with turn signals flashing. Trouble was they went straight ahead. That gives you a few anxious moments. John R. Schmitt had a letter from his brother Martin telling that he now has to carry a cane. Says yours truly has to carry a cane to keep Cub fans away. They don't swarm around us much, Martin, unless they have a winning streak (like one game) going and that isn't often. Now is the time to put fertillizer on your lawn so you will have -to run the lawn mower more next summer. This is the time of year when we get the strangest mail. One firm wants to sell us a cap that will make us look bald. Says we can be the life of the party. Another says they can make a singer out of us in just two weeks. Here's one that has a short course that will teach us to get up and speak before a large crowd withoiff getting nervous. Of course, there is a slight fee in each case. Haven't received ' our se63 catalogue yet so how can we plan our garden. Fans have always tried to look at the great national pastime as sport while pome declared that owners of baseball clubs were operating big business. Now Koufax and Drysale demand a million dollar (How much is that?) contract to pitch for the Dodgers. That's big business! There is something to be said for the good old days when athletes were happy to be assigned a uniform. When George Chuvalo can extend the Cassius Clay ("I am the greatest") lo 15 rounds, let's not speak of the present champ in the same breath with Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis or Rocky Marciano. PICKUPS: We covet others' privileges until we discover the responsibilities that go with them. Peace rules the day, where reason rules the mind. Advertise - It Pa>. Come and see the battle of the classes when the timid Freshman take on the roaring Sophomores. Then comes the main event when the "rough necks" of the Junior class tiake on the undercover athletes of the Senior class in game of basketball. Game time is 6:45 at M.C.H.S. April 1.
