TREES AND NITROGEN Spreading nitrogen on the ground will result in as much tree growth as placing it in holes or using a liquid, variety. That's the advice of Illinois Natural History Survey plant pathologists E. B. Himelick and Dan Neely. During the last three years, Dr. Neely and Himelick have experimented on trees growing in Andres silt loam soil in the Morton Arboretum near Chicago. They found that spreading the equivalent of six pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet produced better tree-diameter growth than the growth in Unfertilized trees. Applying a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium beneath the soil surface in either dry or liquid form produced no greater growth than spreading nitrogen alone on the surface.
