The township election in McHenry this year was a quiet affair, there being no contests and therefore only 110 votes were cast at the polls. Henry Meyers, Sr., of this city broke his hip when he fell backwards from a stairs while at work at the Terra Cotta factory. Ted is now spending a two week 15ave visiting his family and friends before reporting to San Diego, Calif., for his new assignment. We wish him good luck in the future. More Florida Vacationers George and Olivia Hiller and Mike and Eva Schaefer re- 4lirned last week after a delightful vacation through the south. They had a chance to see the Hillers' son, Chuck, who is in spring training with the Mets in Florida. Everyone is>anxious to have the baseball 9eason get underway and see just how the Mets and all their other teams will do this year. Roger and Gloria Pechous and their three children took off for Florida right after school let out for the Easter Vacation. They spent this time Visiting with Roger's folks who •reside there. They also did a lot' of sightseeing which the young ones will remember for a long, long time. Entertains for Easter The George Gilpin family, Herbert H. Freund and Sandi Smith, all of McHenry, along with Mr. and Mrs. Tony Freund and son, Ted, were Easter Sunday guests in the home of the Bob Freund family. The Donald Dowe family of Lincoln, 111., spent the holiday visiting their relatives here in town. They had a chance to show-off their new son who was born in December. Home from the Hospital We are happy to hear Pete Smith is now at home after a stay in a Chicago hospital. He will be taking it easy for a while but we are all sure he will come out on top. Holiday Visit with Sister Ted and Diane Stilling spent Holy Thursday in Jefferson, Wis., where they visited their sister, Carol Ann. She was unable to come home for the Easter holiday so the two visited her the entire day. Enjoys Mother's Stay Pam Hiller is most happy to have her mother here from Minnesota for a short stay. You can well imagine all the chitchat they will be doing sq they are sure to get everything covered before she .returns home. Stephanie is certainly enjoying grandma's visit too. Ten Years Ago (Taken from the files of April 12, 1956) April 16 marks the retirement of one of the community's best liked residents and one whose term of service with one firm covers a longer period of time than almost any other local man. He is Robert Thompson who completed thirty- six years with McHenry Lumber company on April 4 of this year. Mrs. Glen Draper has been named delegate to represent thirteen societies to the international convention of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League in Denver, Colo. Delegates will be present at the convention from every state, plus Canada. L. J. Huck, Sr., died at Memorial hospital April 10 of pneumonia after a three weeks illness. Mikko Jarvenranta of Helsinki, Finland, will be special guest and speaker at the meeting of the Mchenry Rotary club April 12. Mp« and Mrs. Donald R. Me^er, Sr., are the parents of a son, John Francis, born April 5. A wedding of local interest was solemnized in St. Pat-, rick's Catholic church in Canton, Mass., on April 7 uniting in marriage Miss Fleur Peters of Canton and William Nye of McHenry. The Salvatorian Fathers and Brothers at St. Nazianz, Wis., announce the reopening of their summer camp at Fish Lake for boys between the ages of 8 and 14 inclusive. is giving private lessons to a nephew of ex vice-president of the United States, John N. Garner. Melvin Walsh, son of Mrs. M. J. Walsh, left this week for Fort Bragg, N.C., after being drafted in the selective service for one year. He was the guest of honor at several parties before his departure. Mrs. Fred Huemann of Riverside Drive passed away March 29 at St. Therese hospital in Waukegan where she had .been confined for three months with a heart condition. AID CASELOAD SHOWS 635 ON COUNTY ROLLS Twenty-Five Years Ago (Taken from the files of April 3, 1941) Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Crouch will reopen the McHenry Floral shop in the Peter M. Justen building which formerly housed the West McHenry postoffice. The Crouches have been in the floral business in McHenry since they came to this city about nine years ago. Their first shop was located in the B. J. Brefeld building on the north side of Main street, later they moved across the street into the Jos. W. Freund building. About a year ago they built a home next to their green house on route 31. Mrs. Henry Reese of Chicago, formerly Mildred Thompson of McHenry, has the distinction of tutoring the two daughters of the present governor of Illinois, Dwight H. Green. Part of the increase was due to the initiation of the Medical Assistance Program, which provides for the payment of medical services for some persons who do not receive assistance to meettheir basic living costs. Harold O. Swank, director of the Illinois Department of Public Aid, said that the January, 1966, total of 403,273 included 9,980 cases of persons or families which received medical assistance only under the Medical Assistance Program. The January 1966 total of 403,273 recipients was 3,394 more than the 399,879 on the rolls in December 1965, and 23,199 less than the January 1965 total of 426,472. Steve and his new bride, Bonnie, left Thursday, April 7, for California where Steve is stationed in the Air Force. Easter Dinner Joe and Eleanor Hushka and family spent Easter in Chicago with Joe's niece, Diane Hushka. The Don Schweikerts spent the day with Don's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Schweikert, of McHenry Shores. Weekend Trip Bob and Joan Freund spent the weekend of the second in Chicago. They spent Saturday shopping on State street and saw two movies and went to the Museum of Science and Industry and had a real nice weekend in general. Joan even managed to get turned around in a big department store and went out* the exit at the opposite end of the block from where Bob was to meet her. She waited for almost half an hour before he found her. Don't feel bad, Joan. If it had been me I would still be there, at least you found your way out. New Helpers I have had two girls offer to help me gather news. Beverly Eggert and Kathy Freund will be making some of the phone calls now which will be a help to me.
