News Items Neva Brod's sister and her husband, Dr. and Mrs. Best, from Bristol, Tenn., spent a few days in the Shores before returning home following a vacation trip to California. Beth Lexow had a busy w e e k e n d c e l e b r a t i n g h e r fifth birthday. On Friday Susie and David Ewald, Cathy and e Jeff Musielak, Brian and Missy Calvert, Debbie Vilim, Chuckie Jenner and Scott and Terry Shulda from the Pistakee area had lunch, ice cream and cake and played games. Doris Chambers, a friend of Joyce's, stopped in with her little dummy 'Hickory Wood' and entertained the kids after the refreshments. On Sunday evening Mr. and Mrs. Wood and daughter, Phyllis, from Palatine and grandpa and grandma Wilson were invited to a delicious meal and on Monday the chidren in Beth's kindergarten class were treated to cookies for the big day. Beth received many gifts but her white 'go go' boots thrilled her the most. Ten couples from the Shores were present at a roast beef dinner la!st Saturday evening at a hall in town and our own Ken Schopp was a busy man being head chef in the kitchen. Everything was delectable Ken and we all enjoyed it. On Saturday night a group of folks are going to the Fox Lake Lions Club dance and dinner and we know from past reports that this will be a happy occasion. Most of us in the area Had quite a scare on Monday night when we looked out to see a brush fire burning to the south of us. Cars were lined up bumper to bumper all the way to Wright Road and some of the boys pitched in and helped the firemen. Luckily it started to rain because it was spreading faster than the boys could put it out and the sound of thunder was most welcome. Sam Zeimet has been having exceptional luck in catching fish at the channel and all his neighbors are enjoying fish dinners. Sorry In last week's column I inadvertantly gave James and Dolores Kelly an extra daughter, Ann. While I was busy writing down the names and birthdays of the family I abbreviated anniversary as Ann and then listed her as a daughter. I hereby relieve them of one child. Baby Shower for Darlene Hattan Darlene was surprised on Saturday night by seventeen co-workers and received many lively gifts for the expected baby. The girls treated her to dinner in Crystal Lake and spent the rest of the evening opening the many useful articles. Charles MacCallum Passe* Away Friends of the MacCallums were sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. MacCallum who died on Nov. 4 in St. Petersburg, Fla., where they have resided for a year since leaving the Shores. Our condolences go to the family and his wife Bernice. Bowling News Last Wednesday the L and M construction bowlers hit the big time and are now in first and second place in the league. Marshall Jacobs is sponsoring two teams and it looks as if he has some expert bowlers on each team. BETTY HETTERMANN ANNUAL CLOTHING DRIVE HELD IN HOLDIAY WEEK As is the practice in St. John's and many other parishes throughout the county, Thanksgiving is the time for their annual closing drive for the poor. Any clean clothing, with the exception of hats, high heeled shoes, purses, or girdles will be greatly received. Please go through your' closets now and get any wearable articles, whether it be infant's wear, men's, women's or chidren's clothing. All are needed. Drop them off at the Mike Schaefer home on Church Street, either next Sunday or anytime during the week of Nov. 20. Also, Mrs. Schaefer will need help in sorting and packing these clothes. If you can assist her, please call and she will <tell you when to be there. . Attends GraHflntu'n First Communion there such as Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Wirtz of McHenry and Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Freund when they were on hand to witness the First Holy Communion of their grandson, Raymond Wirtz. They were guests in the home of Jack and Catherine Wirtz of Elgin to celebrate the occasion on Nov. 5. Visiting Kin The home of Arnie and Clara Michels really had its " r o o f r a i s e d " , o v e r l a s t weekend. Loads of Clara's family members were in town to attend the golden wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Freund. Staying in the Michels home and having a real gabfest since Thursday were: Mr. and Mrs. George Logsdon and son, Jim, of Alvada, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bugner and son, Ed, and William Bugner all of Fostoria, Ohio, and Miss Cathy Bugner of Ann Arbor, Mich. Visiting Rev. Father Raymond Hettermartn in South Beloit on Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. John Freund, Mrs. Anthony M. Freund and Mrs. Joe E. Freund. Bartmann Children Share Birthday Spotlight A birthday party for Jeff and Patti Bartmann was held in their home on Blitsch Place, on Monday, Nov. 7, for all their little friends. Jeff w a s c e l e b r a t i n g b i r t h d a y number 2, while his sister celebrated number 1. Present for the party were Debbie and Greg Sobiesk, Joey Majercek, Bobby and Steven Hopp, Donna Hopp and her cousin, George, Sherri Sheehan, and Christy Bradley, On Patti's actual bilthdate, Oct. 31, all of the family members from both sides were in the Bartmann home for the double partying. Keeping in step with the date, Halloween decorations were a-plenty. Wishing the two youngsters happy birthday were Mr. and Mrs. George Fraunhoffer, Gene and Judy Nett and their family, John and Mary Olson, the celebrants uncles Rick, Tom, Bob, Joel and Randy Wakitsch, and last, but certainly not least Grandpa and Grandma, Gerry and Marcell Wakitsch. Open House For Silver Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Leo (Hack) Michels are Roping that many of their friends will join in helping them celebrate 'their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary next Saturday, Nov. 19. The open house celebration will be held in the Johnsburg Community Club hall after 7:30 in the evening. A Mass in their honor will be read in St. John's church at 3 in < the afternoon on this day. All of us join in wishing them 'the happiest wishes possible. C.Y.J. To Elect Officers •. All the high school youth of the parish are invited to participate in the C.Y.J, meeting next Sunday, after the 9:30 Mass in St. John's school. Election of officers will ibe hold at this time. Lots of Activity in Store For Boy Foresters A meeting of the boy Foresters will be held tonight (TTiursday) in the community club hall. Games will be played and refreshments will be served as well as an attendance prize awarded. Election of officers is also on the agenda for this meeting. All boy Forester members are urged to attend. City of McHENRY NOW has 975 Par k i n g S pa c e s WATER ew6 CHERRY VALLEY CLUB. The local achievement program for the Cherry Valley 4-H club was held recently at the Farm Bureau auditorium, Woodstock. Jeff Brody welcomed the parents, new members and special guests. Carol Curran told about her trip )ast summer to 4-H Club Week. Ken Wright gave a report on the county fair, followed by a brief summary of the activities of the 4-H federation by Carol Curran. Donna Schmelzer gave an interesting talk on the purpose of the public speaking activity and encouraged all members to take part. A project talk on small engines was given by Ken Wright, after which Donna Schmelzer told what home economic projects meant to her. Demonstrations were done by Jeanne Wright and Terry Knutsen on making egg salad and Jeff Brody and Roger Wright on applying bandages. Louis Englebrecht, our farm advisor, challenged us on be-.> coming not only better 4-H ers but better citizens. Our special guest, Casper j Vann, showed some slides of Paris, Rome and other points of interest in Europe. Our leaders, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wright, handed out the awards earned during the past year. These were: State Outstanding, Donna Schmelzer; State Projects, Carol Cur-, ran and Donna Schmelzer, County Outstanding, C a r ol Curran and Donria Schmelzer; County Project, Carol Curran, ; Donna Schmelzer and Jeanne' Wright. An automotive pin was r awarded Ken Wright and a freezing pin to Jeanne Wright. First year pin, Greg Alderson; third year pin, Jeff Brody and Roger Wright; fifth year pins, Carol Curran, J e a n n e W r i g h t a n d K e n Wright. Others receiving achievement seals were Larry Knutsen, Terry Knutsen, and Donna* Schmelzer. A lovely lunch was enjoyed by all following the meetihg.
