THE DRIVER'S SEAT The tourist mecca of palms, sund and palmettos--Florida isn't quite so alluring on its highways. Last year 1,665 persons were killed and 90,464 people were injured in 169,408 accidents on the state's roads and high* ways, according to a recent issue of Florida Truck News. Of these accidents, 29,000 involved trucks. More than 75 [>ercent of the 29,000 accidents involved passenger cars, killing 322 persons and injuring 7.857 others. To combat the carnage on its highways, Florida has instituted an accident reduction safety program to remove traffic hazards. Priority is being given to completing Florida's 1,152-mile Interstate highway network. This type of highway includes modern design and construction and the latest safety features, such as large green directional sighs and guard rails. As part of the safety program, the state is also trying to counter driver errors; committed on entering or leaving . expressways, which may result in serious, head-on collisions because motorists are driving the wrong way^? A frontal attack on this pro.blem, according to the Road department, includes the installation of signs on interchange ramps. They read: "Stop! You are Going the Wrong Way!" In addition, reflective arrows have been placed on the pavement to alert drivers if they are going in the wrong direction. The night driver headed in the right direction will see only white, but the motorist going in the wrong direction will face a red arrow [>ointing at him. Hie arrows reflect a car's headlights, bouncing the light directly back to the driver. Also under attack are hazards on the state's 11,000-mile primary highway system. In the spot hazard program being conducted by the Road department, 104 high-accident spots, accounting for a total of 1,145 accidents in a 21- month period, are being corrected. These measures include widening bridges, stabilizing and widening shoulders, flattening side slopes and better channelizing of intersections with lane markings to guide motorists. -Perhaps the most spectacular hazard facing Florida drivers are the canals that parallel highways in the southern part of the state. To re- . duce the "toll of 488 people who drowned in the canals from ... 1954 to 1964, guard rails are being constructed. SINGERS PREPARE PRESENTATION OF OR ATORIO This year, under the direction of Mrs. Russell Griffith, the Northern Illinois Choral association will perform almost all the choral portions of the oratorio in its annual Winter concert Sunday evening, Dec. 4, at 8 p.m. in Crystal Lake Central school auditorium. Several of the very-seldom heard choruses are to be included, as well as all the "old favorites". The style of performance will be in the style of Handel's day- light, delicate and baroque. T i c k e t s a r e a v a i l a b l e from Mrs. Griffith, Mrs. Richard Denker and Mrs. George Hartung, all of Crystal Lake. Raymond W. Peirce is president of the Northern Illinois Choral association.
