Darlene • • • 180.00 Itlill by Paul Powell Secretary of State ®With winter weather almost upon us, the careful motorist \\;ill begin to prepare for a change in driving conditions. It's a good idea to be prepared to meet such situations and please don't blame the weather man for any problems created by car trouble. Windshields must be kept clear of snow, ice and frost. Dangerous driving situations must be seen to be avoided, so by all means make sure your headlights, windshield wiper blades and your defrosters are working in top condition. A good way to prepare yourself for changed conditions is to try your brakes away from traffic in order to get a better feel of the road. In doing this, you'll be able to adjust your speed to all Borts of road and weather conditions. It's a good idea to use tire chains on snow or ice as they cut stopping distance in about half. Good chains are said to give from four to seven times more climbing and starting traction ability. A careful motorist will remember to pump his brakes to slow down or stop. Needless jamming of the brakes can lock the wheels and may throw a vehicle into a dangerous skid. Too many lives have been lost that way. And Anally remember to stay well behind the vehicle you are following, giving yourself plenty of room to stop. Traffic experts warn us that it takes from three to twelve times as far to stop on snow or ice as on the dry concrete. ^ \ A copy of "Rules of the Road" is a helpful guide to better driving. Meeting at Cary, the insurance men accepted an invitation from the board of supervisors insurance committee to work with that government group to see how taxpayers' money can be saved. Named to the committee by Frank Low, McHenry, president, were George Maas, Hebron; Robert Bauman, Crystal Lake; and Robert Long, Woodstock. The newly-organized county insurance group also approved joining the Independent Insurance Agents of Illinois' for a "Traffic Safety Day" on the fourth Sunday in May. A request will go to Governor Otto Kerner from the state organization to proclaim the "day" as a means of making the public aware of the continuing need for safety-mindedness. Virgil Pollock, McHenry, will head this committee if the project develops. $ 4,073.69 $ 87,103.26 $ 42,755.20 $ 9,823.87 $ 12,221.15 Signed: A. M.
