"We have done some things to make teen-age boys and girls know the basic dangers of smoking. We have made films available, contacted school officials and offered to appear before students." But Dr. Alvary said citizens can expect a substantial reduction in deaths from cancer only if students at the junior-high level are reached and informed of the dangers of smoking. Cancer of the lung is the most rapidly-mounting cause of death from cancer. McHenry coyhty residents "have seen this strike home within the past few months. At least three well-known citizens have died as a result of lung cancer. The McHenry county unit has adopted a policy of stressing the desire to inform students about the dangers of smoking. Mrs. Alice Rath, public education chairman, advises that some doctors feel youngsters should see the movies, "Shall I Smoke?" and "Is Smoking Worth It?" as early as the fourth or fifth grades! Mrs. Rath has films available She will arrange for a program, including a doctor to take part and answer questions. Her phone is 338-3738. The ACS has encouragement for present-day smokers: When they do stop smoking, their lungs improve and the danger from cancer is much reduced. The ACS in McHenry county continues its war against cancer with money given through "memorials." Memorials are funds established in the name of a person who has died, with contributions going to the fund and the American Cancer society. Nov. 26, and Sunday, Nov. 27. * The harpsichord, a forerunner of the present day piano, depends upon the plucking of single strings for its unique tone quality, so intricately a part of Baroque tone color. Leather plectra are used in the harpsichord to be used by the Fine Arts Chorale. The performance on Saturday, Nqsv. 26 will begin at 8 p.m. and Sunday's performance will begin at 2 p.m. Although the entire oratorio is to be presented, the performance will only last two hours.
