WONDER LAKE NEWS EVELYN RASKE PHONE 058-4882 SCOUT NEWS PUBLIC PULSE MERIT CITATION AWARD PRESENTED TO POSTMASTER A special "Citation of Merit" for cooperation in President Johnson's natural beauty program will be presented Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2:30 to Wonder Lake, announced Paul Eberle. Postmaster Eberle will accept the award on behalf of the citizens of Wonder Lake and the Wonder Lake Garden Club, Boy Scouts, American Legion, and Kiwanis who helped in the beautification effort. Frank G. Sulewski who will represent Postmaster General Lawrence O'Brien at the presentation ceremony said: "Only those communities which have made a concerted effort to improve the appearance of their post offices are recipients of the award. The citation is presented after the postal facility has received a superior rating in a very rigid inspection by postal officials from regional headquarters and reveiwed carefully by the Assistant Postmaster General for facilities. President Johnson's natural beauty program is designed to improve the landscape of the nation. The Wonder Lake post office will receive the award as the result of the balanced landscaped grounds surrounding the building and the Lobby displays. The emphasis on aesthetics should make our post office a more pleasant place to visit and do business. Postmaster Eberle commented. It should be emphasized that our project was begun to enhance the appearance of the area and we hope that others in the community will be encouraged to make Wonder Lake more attractive. Frank Sulewski, Assistant to the Regional Director Post Office Department of Chicago, will make the presentation this coming Saturday. Wonder Lakers will remember him as the Post Master General's representative at the dedication of the Wonder Lake Post Office in 1961. All civic groups and citizens are invited to the post office for the presentation. "Dear Editor: "I am writing this letter to ask for voter support for, the McHenry elementary school referendum for the educational, Building and Transportation funds on Dec. 10, 1966. "We need the additional tax money to keep our schools progressing. The inflationary period in which we now find ourselves means that it costs more today to educate. Salaries must increase to hire and keep good administrators and teachers. We hope to promote a broader education for our children such as the experimental programs in economics and foreign languages we now offer. In short, we wish to give the best education possible for your tax dollar. "In the Building fund, which is for the maintenance of buildings, not construction, wc know all maintenance costs are rising and will continue to rise. "ITiis fund should not be confused with building now buildings, but only the maintenance of all the buildings we have. We need permission to levy the maximum of 5 cents more. "Briefly, on transportation, the board is in the process of selecting a Blue Ribbcn committee to study and recommend to the board a better and sounder method of transportation. But at present, the 8 cents does not allow this fund to carry its own weight. For this reason the board h^ made recent decisions to put transportation on a sounder financial basis. The additional 7 cents is needed desperately to meet our transportation needs. "Finally, I wish to point out that we are asking the owner of an average house of $15.- 000 approve an increase in DECEMBER 8, 1966 - MCHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE 3, SECTION 2 his taxes for $33 total which will be levied at $5 cr $6 per .year for five or six years. "Sincerely yours, "Thomas L. Lawson "Secretary. District 15" "Dear Readers: "Elementary school District 15 needs a tax rate increase! Why? Because in this time of rising costs, the board of education and the administration want not only to maintain the present standard of educational services but even to expand those services for the i^ood of the community. "This is my seventh year on the board and I believe we have made progress every year toward a better educational system. We have increased the administration staff for better efficiency. We have added specialists in reading, speech correction, psychology and guidance. We have expanded the curriculum and updated our texts arid methods of instruction. "But we have not done all we can do or all that we muS^ do to provide our children with the opportunities they deserve. The need for ever better education is more and more critical in our complex society. "When the board wrote its policies in 1961, part of the e d u c a t i o n a l p h i l o s o p h y w a s expressed as follows: 'It is in the best interest not only of the individual but also of the community that each of its citizens develops to his fullest potential. The public school has an important role in this development.' "Please help us to help our community by a yes vote in the referendum Dec. 10. "A.J.
