The pledges were led by Peggy Coughlin. Guest at the meeting was Karen Nelson, introduced by Heather Lamont. The achievement awards wore handed out as a highlight of the meeting. Mary Leo Wight, Michele Dustimer and Debbie Cristy were awarded state project honor. Mary Lee Wight and Debbie Cristy were also awarded county outstanding member award. Mrs. Mary Ann Cristy and Mrs. Pat Sullivan received leader awards. A Christmas party was voted unanimously and a grab bag at fifty cents was voted on. Buss, USCG, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon F. Boss of McHenry, was graduated from the Aids to Navigation School at the Coast Guard Training center in Groton, Conn. The nine-week course provides instruction in servicing, operation and repair of buoy lanterns and their mechanisms. Upon completion of the course, he will serve as an assistant in a manned light station or any unit responsible for minor aids to navigation. At present, the Coast Guard maintains more than 42,000 aids to navigation for the guidance and safety of marine vessels. Seaman Apprentice James R. Gerth, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. John ft. Gerth of 1304 W, Goodview Ave., McHenry, has reported to Beachmaster Unit Two, based at the Amphibious base, Little Creek, Norfolk, Va. The unit is responsible for the coordination of landing craft during an amphibious assault and the smooth movement of supplies to the Marines ashore after the landing has been affected. Army Private Cory A. Patterson, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. William N. Patterson, 1421 W. Lakeview, McHenry, completed advanced armor training at Ft. Knox, Ky., Nov. 26. During the course, he was trained to drive and maintain the Army's M-60 tank and fire its 105-millimeter gun. James Nielson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian J. Nielsen of 4709 W. Willow lane, a n d M a r i n e P r i v a t e F i r s t Class Michael J. Niska, son of Mrs. Jean E. Niska of 1611 N. Park street both of McHenry, are presently serving with the Fourth battalion, Eleventh Marine regiment, Task Force X-Ray, First Marine division at Chu Lai, Vietnam. The Fourth battalion provides direct artillery support for the Fifth Marine regiment. In addition to firing "harrassment and interdiction" to discourage enemy activity in the Fifth Marines' area, the battalion frequently fire night illuminatior.. On combat operations in the field, the unit's artillery batteries offer vital support to the Fifth Marines' infantrymen. Chu Lai is approximately 50 _miles south of Da Nang, on the South China Sea. Army Private Richard Himpelmann, 22, son of Mrs. Dorothy M. Himpelmann, 3611 N. completed eight weeks of advanced infantry training Nov. 19 at Ft. Lewis, Wash. He received specialized instruction in small unit tactics and in firing such weapons as the M-14 rifle, the M-60 machinegun and the 3.5-inch rocket launcher. Yeoman Seaman William H. Hansen, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry R. Hansen of 3719 Freund Ave., McHenry, is one of more than 3,000 crewmen helping to celebrate the 5th birthday of this nuclearpowered aircraft carrier, the world's largest warship, during a port visit to Hawaii. The 90,000-ton attack carrier departed her homeport at the Alameda, Calif., Naval Air Station in mid-November and has been undergoing operational readiness exercises in the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands. Operations at sea included fire fighting, navigation, flight operations, weapons handling and seamanship drills designed to keep the crew in a state intensive at-sea training visits were made to Pearl Harbor, giving crewmen a chance to see the Honolulu area. Seaman Apprentice William G. Simpson, USN, son of Mrs. Georgia J. Simpson of 7510 Hancock drive, Wonder Lake, 111., is serving as a crewmember aboard the amphibious force flagship Taconic. The Navy's amphibious forces have constantly proven to be one of the most reliable means for transporting and landing battle ready troops, with necessary heavy equipment, on the shores of a threatened area.
