RUDY BECKER'S KENNELS AID CASELOAD ANNOUNCED 1M McHENRY COUHTY Illinois' public assistance caseload totaled 408,435 in October, an increase of 2,317 over September, Harold O. Swank, director of the Department of Public Aid, said this week. The October total was 16, 049 persons higher than the October, 1965, figure, a month in which many cases : HAPPY j NEW YEAR YES We Have Them Here were discontinued temporarily because of adjustments reflecting retroactive Social Security payments. The October, 1966, increase was attributed primarily to an increase in the number of persons receiving Medical Assistance only. There were 35,674 persons receiving Medical Assistance only and payments amounted to $2,068,048. Payments for medical services only during September were $2,286,419, for 31,123 persons. The 4,551 increase from September to October is reflected in all the federally aided assistance programs. The caseload in McHenry county was as follows: Total, all persons, 660, $44,953; old age assistance, 210, $21,687; aid to dependent children, 291, $13,313; blind assistance, 3, $289; disability assistance, 46, $5,776; general assistance, 34, $3,888. JUNIOR COLLEGE BACKERS LOOK AHEAD TO '67 Two important dates regarding the Junior college for the McHenry county area are Jan. 10 and the last week in March. On Jan. 10 a public hearing will be conducted in the Woodstock Community high school beginning at 7:30 p.m. and the last week in March is the target date for ttyc referendum. The need for such a college has been found to be of importance by the Junior College association for the McHenry county area. Costs for high school graduates to attend such a local community college are several hundred dollars a year less than attendance at a typical fouryear institution. Other advantages listed by the association include opportunities for the less gifted student. Many four-year institutions are no longer, able to accept these students although they often make a greater contribution to society. Unless there are more o p p o r t u n i t i e s a v a i l a b l e through a junior college in vocational and technical courses, these people can become a drain on society. Adults working toward a degree are served by a local junior college in the ^hfeas of self-improvem e n t, mentally and financially. Since there is no age barrier for adults wishing to work toward a degree many of them could fulfill a goal not otherwise possible. One of the most important groups in McHenry county, the agricultural force, would be served in many ways. Students from farms could begin a college career while still working at home or they could attain a terminal degree in agri-business, agri-- mechanics and agricultural technology. Industries presently operating in the county would be provided the educational and technical trained employees required. This also means that residents could be locally trained and remain in the county work force. Questionnaires to high school students were distributed by the association to 2,825 junior and senior boys and girls, with 2,314 returned. Of these, over half indicated attendance or possible attendance at a local junior DECEMBER 29, 1966 - MCHENRY PL/INDEALER - PAGE U, SECTION I college. Nearly one-quarter of them said they would attend if they could' not enroll in the college of their choice. The remainder would attend because they could get a part-time job while going to school in addition to many other reasons. Vocational-technical fie 1 d s indicated as choices included business management, commercial art, secretarial, interior decorating, dath processing. auto mechanics, practical nursing, drafting and blueprint, laboratory technician, advertising, dental technician, agriculture, welding, salesmanship, retailing, factory mangement, dietetics and ejpctric wiring and motors. A local college would be staffed, it is felt by the association. through retired college teachers; retired military personnel; high school teachers desiring to move up a bracket; or business and professional peopple a n d trades people in specific fields. Such practical experiences in many instances offset academic requirements of a master's degree in the vocational fields.
