:Z' PG. 4, 3tC. I - PLAINDEAUR - MAR. 23, 1967 £ • rr r-*«•> - W&W Our Warrior basketball team has had recognition through Tom Evans being selected on several All-Area teams. It isn't easy to be recognized when on a team that isn't at or near the top. So -- all the more credit as we see it. SO I HEAR By Earl Walsh Mrs. Albert also told us that the wing spread and flight of these beauties is a grand sight. Baseball Season Never before have we picked a winner in the state basketball tourney, then didn't put it in print. Doubt it and we'll refer you to our wife. She won't even swear to it when we tell a little fib. "Lippy" Leo Durocher seems like a tame kitten compared to Eddie "The Brat" Stanky this spring. Stanky can hold his own in verbal clashes with the tike's of John Romano, his former catcher, but taking cm Casey Stengel may be getting out of his class. Sports fans should send a word of appreciation to the sponsors for the wonderful coverage of the state basketball tournament, ft is really great. . But, these little feuds may be good for baseball. The game can stand some of those clash- - es to liven 15) interest. Visited Mary McCabe Sunday just after the White Sox had lost a ball game and she wasn't at all happy with afellownamed Horlen who served tf> too many fat pitches. By gosh, we got out of Mc- Henry County this week! An unexpected trip to Chicago came up fast Tuesday morning so we tourned down to Crystal Lake where we actually found a parking place near the depot. OPENS DHUS MOORS M COACH LOOKS FOR PFTCHE By Bert Hagemann This past week the McHenry baseball teams opened their spring training under the controlled weather conditions of the McHenry gym. Pitchers and catchers at all levels have been throwing this week and working on conditioning in preparation for the upcoming season which opens the second week in April. At the varsity level I have returning lettermen Pat Camasta infield, Bruce Domoto outfielder, Jerry Glosson catcher, Kit Carstens and Bob Funk pitchers, and juniors Bill Kuecherl and Dave Sard, who both play the infield. I The McHenry high school baseball squad held its first mann ar© returning letterman, Kit Carstens, Jerry Glosson, practice Monday of this week in the high school gym. Talk- Jim Laursen, Bob Funk; Dave Sard and Bill Knechel. ing over the coming season with varsity Coach Bert Hage- NEED PITCHERS Graduation losses on the mound and behind the plate were devastating, and there is no doubt I will have to find pitching help from some source before very long in order to make a run at the first division this year. Some of the juniors I will be counting on heavily will be Chuck Reilly, George Piccolo, Dave Weber, Steve Stahlman, Jim Smith, Paul Schwegel, Jim LauFsen, Mike Mikkelsen, Steve M- :• \ ^ { '-* v • Kutnick, and Chuck Petersen. This group of juniors had great success the past two years in baseball, but due to players moving and ineligibility, their numbers have been diminished severely and junior pitchers will be very scarce this season. This puts the load on a small number of seniors who will have to provide leadership and the steady {>l9y necessary for any kind of consistent winning play in th^ North Suburban., ( "IFFY" CLUB * As of right now, the "ifs" cm this ball club are numerous, wcT any kind of prediction would be impossible. Once we are outside in more natural conditions, the picture pieces will fali into place and we'll have a better idea of what is in store for this coming season. Next week I'll preview the North Suburban conference and go out on my tree limb for season predictions. If they come out as horrible as those in basketball, I'll turn the crystal ball over to some other soothsayer. Mary verified the story our mother used to tell about Comiskeys (former Sox owners) hanging a lantern out at their home near the McHenry dam when the Sox won. It was a signal to the Irish Prairie fans. Mary says Joe Comiskey used to climb on the barn and wave the lantern. That was long, long ago. Getting into the depot in Chicago, we found things changed so much that it made us realize it is a long time between trips these days. Took a cab to the loop and ran into so much traffic that it seemed like a skate board would be faster. When our mother was in her 80*s she used to phone us with a play-by-play account when the Sox won. When they lost, the' phone didn't ring. Intended to walk about three blocks to make a call on the way back to the station, then couldn't get a cab. Stopped in to pay a visit in St. Peter's church (Hi Madison Street where people come and go day and night. By Bill Bolger We held Little League registration last Saturday but, judging by the phone calls coming in, the message didn't get thru to all the boys who want to play. We will extend registration for a while to accommodate those who missed signing up last Saturday. You can pick up registration cards at Ernie's Sports Center any time this week. You may register with him if you wish, on Saturday March 25th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be a Little League officer at the City Hall to accept registrations. Let's get those cards in so you can play ball this year. Cards must be signed by the parents. The registration fee is still $4.00, which helps pay for insurance, caps, umpires and equipment. To be eligible to register you must .live within McHenry*s Little League area. In addition you must have reached your eighth but not your thirteenth birthday before August 1st of this year.
