The lead paragraph and a few more were set up on the right side so you had to switch around to follow as. You almost had to read from right to left One reader asked "What do you do about a thing like that?" We explained that such things are just the hazards of the trade. SO I HEAR By Earl Walth a World Series between the Cubs and Sox. The Sox have finally lost a game - just when it looked like they might not lose a game the rest of the season. After reading reports of fabulous salaries of entertainment stars the thought came that baseball umpires and all sports officials are underpaid. Among the.new cheerleaders chosen for Marian Central, we note the names of Lynne Merkel, Sue Conway and Gail Mc- Comack of McHenry. Nice going, girls. Raise your boy to conduct his own TV show or buy him a guitar. In no time, he'll pay off the mortgage. ' Nice word of appreciation for sports coverage comes from Donald L. Powers, Sports Information Director at Whitewater State University. So sorry we were not in when Jerry Miller stopped to bring us a streamer headline "GET YOUR WORLD SERIES TICKETS NOW!" Nancy Batjes of Wonder Lake was active in planning the 1967 May Fete at Northern Illinois University, tt is the students' spring fling before final examinations. The Cubs had moved above the .500 mark and Jerry wanted to be sure we had the glad tidings. We are so happy to get such news since, as we have said so many times, there is nothing we would enjoy more than SPEED CENTER TO HOLD FIRST COLD RUSH NIGHT Lake Geneva, Wis. The Lake Geneva Speed Center has announced that the first annual Gold Rush Night will be held this Saturday night, May 20. The event is one that is entirely new in this area. The plan has been very well received by both drag strip and race track fans on the west coast. During intermission at the Speed Center Saturday night, fans will be permitted to go into the infield of the asphalt oval track. A truck will be driven along the main straightaway of the oval and coins will be, shoveled out onto the track. At a signal, fans will have the chance to rush forward and pick up as many coins as possible. An additional prize will be mads to the person picking up the mcst coins. Coins used are real and not tokens. The rush of fans for the "gold" is just as exciting to watch as the California Gold Rushes were in the '49* s. In addition, the regular program of modified and stock car auto races will be held. This plan is just one of many planned for Speed Colter fans this summer. Chuck Chuck has come alive recently with the bat and has been supplying the team with some of the long ball panaches the team baa lacked this season. Chuck plays the outfield and can also play first base. • Your Friendly Pharmacy • 1325 X. KlverHidr Dr. • MrHenry, HI- • Phone 885-4426 Waukegan First, McHenry. Bill the Bullet Bohn from Bristol; won the 30 lap feature here tonight in the second week of modified stock car racing at the Lake Geneva Speed Center. Thirtytwo modifieds were on hand as the competition and attendance were both on a definite up-swing. The feature race had to be restarted when Pete Tropino and Jr. Dodd spun in the first corner on the first lap. On the restart, Fran Ansell took the lead and held it for just one lai> before Bill Bohn breezed into the lead. On the fifth lap, another restart was necessary when several cars tangled in the number four corner. By this time, Jr. Dodd of Waukegan in the A-4 Team Modified, had lost a complete lap, but on the restart, he was positioned between Bohn and Homer Ansell., ; A great battle shaped up between Ron Bergsma, Ron Larson . and Rodger Otto. Ahead of them, Larry Leach and Homer Ansell were engaged in a close duel. By the 12th lap, Otto had moved up into 3rd place and then got around Larry who was then second. CLMSHEDS By Bert Hagemaim McHenry won its first district baseball game in five years on Monday of last week at McCracken field. The gam? was scheduled for Crystal Lake, but because their field was unplayable, the Warriors enjoyed the home field advantage the eighth time this year. The game started out like a slugging match with both teams counting four runs in the first two innings. The game then settled down to a pitchers' duel until the Frank Merriwell finish in the seventh inning. With two out, Pat Camasta blopped a Texas leaguer into short left. On the first pitch to clean-up hitter Chuck Reilly, Camasta took off for second and Reilly drilled one deep to right center to score the winning run of the ball game. Earlier in the game, Reilly electrified the fans with the first Warrior homer of the year as he blasted a long drive to left center with Mark Camasta on second. Even though the Warriors had many heroes this day, credit must go to hard luck pitcher Kit Carstens, Pitching with only one days rest, Kit came in the fourth inning and pitched one hit, shut out ball for the rest of the game to pick up his initial 1967 victory. He threw strikes, picked two runners off base, and held the Crown hitters in check until the seventh when his mates picked up the winning tally. County Conservation Districts, authorized by the state legislature in 1963, have been approved by voters in referendumr. in five counties; Vermilion, Macon, LaSalle, Putnam and Boone. The conservation district program has the backing of conservationists and leaders of the Illinois Audubon Society. Civic and conservation clubs can aid in the preservation of local beauty and history by establishing conservation districts, Raymond Mostek, Dlinois Audubon Society president said. Mostek said the IAS has reprinted copies of a comprehensive article on how districts can be set up and what they 'can accomplish. Additional information and copies of the article can be obtained from the Illinois Audubon Society, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, 60605. Local groups such as sportsmen's clubs, Audubon societies, junior chambers of commerce, etc., can be the sponsoring agency for the formation of a • district. The Warriors managed wily two hits off fireballer Glen Guss, but both came with the sacks crammed, and the four run second inning was enough to send the Tigers down to defeat in the Crystal Lake district tournament, 4 to 2. The Warriors counted all their runs after one was out in the second inning. Mike Janik led off the scoring with a grounder that the shortstop fumbled^ and was moved to third on another Crystal Lake error in the infield off the bat of Dave Sard. The sacks became full when »Dick Doherty coaxed a walk, and one run came home on Georj0 Piccolo's soft liner to center and another on a passed ball. Stahlman followed with a strikeout, but Mark Camasta kept the inning alive with a.walk to jam the sacks again. Bill Keuchel followed with a sharp single to right which scored two runs. On the overthrow to the plate, Camasta was tagged out to end the Warrior scoring for the day. After this splurge, Guss held the Warriors in check for the rest of the ball game. As good as Guss was, starter Steve Stahlman and reliefer Kit Carstens were a shade better. Stahlman kept the Tiger hitters off balance with his assorted breaking pitches and a fast ball which was kept low. When Crystal Lake rallied and began to threaten in the fifth, Carstens came in and for the second time in three days and effectively put out the fire to preserve the win. By the time this article hits the sports page, the Warriors will already have played Elgin in the first round of the Elgin Larkin regional. Perhaps the streak can be kept alive, only time will tell. WARRIORS EDGER BY ELGIN NINE 2-0 IN REGIONAL Hie Elgin jinx has struck agaiiu For years McHenry has found it impossible to defeat an Elgin team in tournament play - of any kind, and last Monday <m the Elgin diamond was no exception. Until the bottom of the sixth inning, the assembled crowd had witnessed a terrific pitching duel between Rick Jurs of Elgin and Bob Funk of McHenry. Although the Warriors had baserunners in scoring position every inning, Jurs had managed to wiggle out of every scrape as the Warriors failed consistently to come up with the clutch hit. Funk was working (Hi a two hitter with two out in the sixth when lightenii^j struck with a loud crash. Bailey droppped a broken bat blooper into left to become the first base runner since the third inning. With the count 2-0 on Mike Rooney, Funk hung a curve up around the letters and Rooney slammed it over the fence in left center. This was the story of the ball game, as the Warriors went down in order in the top of the seventh. McHenry stole three bases on the Maroons, and played errorless, heads up baseball behind wie of the finest Warrior pitching efforts of the season. Although McHenry outhit their opponents 5-4, the difference lay in tfje fact that the clutch effort was lacking. So goes a season which has had its ups and downs. The downs have predominated, but the effort and spirit have not, and this in itself has been a source of pleasure during most games of the season. McHENRY E IMS N. Or. S@S-01Ml FrL-Mon.
