St. Mark's square and; a trip through an ancient caiile with eerie dungeons which were cold, damp, and unlimited, cast a pall over the touring group. They were happier to visit a glass factory wheire they witnessed crystal being hand blown. The city of Venice is slowly sinking and inay disappear in the next century, due to the damage caused by floods. Walls are crumbling and the decay is evident. Evie especially enjoyed the trip through the Medici chapel which holds the Michelangelo statues and other priceless works of art. The floods revealed that one of the cathedrals was constructed above an ancient Roman church and workmen are busy excavating to uncover the entire structure. \ In Rome, Mrs. ^ Halleran visited the famous Fountain of Trevi, the Colleseum, Spanish steps, and the American Embassy. In St. Peter's Square, the noise of horses' hooves on the cobblestones was thundering. When the touring group went through St. Peter's Cathedral, their arms had to be covered, and Evie borrowedthe bus driver's jacket. The interior was of marble, gold gild, and mosaic. The longest tunnel in the world took five years to complete and connects Italy and Switzerland „ and was a joint venture by the two countries. In Paris, Evie visited the Eiffel Tower, Napoleon's tomb and viewed the Arch of Triunqjh. The art museums and a visit to the Louvre proved fascinating. This was where Evie was so thankful to be an American! Her difficulties with the language were almost insurmountable. She just barely got by with an English-German dictionary. She boarded the M.S. Europa in Bremerhaven for the 8H day trip home. The ship featured a swimming pool, and there was entertainment all day long, and dancing every night. June 9, Mrs. OeHalleran landed in New York and after a brief sightseeing tour, she boarded her plane for the trip to O'Hare. When she arrived home, it was to discover that all the children had been ill except Steve and daddy Fred and the two grandmothers had their work cut out for them. It was truly a most memorable trip.
