PP. 4. SEC. 2 - PLAIN DEALER - AUGUST 3, 1967 . Welcome History Book Purchase Scout Program For August Is Aimed At Growth It may be "lots of fun" to boys, but the Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer program themes for August are designed to provide healthy physical, mental and spiritual growth, according to Loren Massey, Scout commissioner of the Kishwaukee district, Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scout program theme Cor August is "Every Scout A Swimmer," and will feature a swim meet with contests and games to fit all classes of swimmers. In addition, the Scouts will have an opportunity to practice swimming, boating and safe baking advancement skills, Massey said. Many Scouts will try the test for the Mile Swim BSA. The Cub Scouts' Outdoor Fun theme in August will vary from pack to pack, but the activities will include picnics at nearby parks, backyard cookouts, fishing trips, tours or other outdoor events. The Cub Scout program theme will also help boys complete achievem?.Tts related to physical fitness, safety, conservation and family activities. High school age Explorers will emphasize participation in local friendship campfire programs in connection with the XII World Jambbred to be held in Idaho in Aulgust and will build their month's program around emergency service, including communications, rescue and first aid, public services and emergency living. One suggested activity for Explorer posts is rescue contests, which involves rescue techniques for a variety of emergency situations. SWIM PROGRAM AWARDS At the conclusion of the first two periods of the Lake Region YMCA's Summer swim instruction classes, youth were tested for their swimming abilities. Many of the boys and girls received recognition for their efforts to climb up the ladder of the YMCA's National Aquatic program. Participants who received awards from McHenry were Minnow, Sheri I»andin; Flying Fish, Bob Rodenkirkand Mary Rodenkirk. Invite Scout Membership In Fall Rowid-iip Boys will be invited to join the Boy Scouts of America as a part of the annual Fall Roundup, the membership campaign of the Kishwaukee District, Blackhawk Area council, Stan Jozwiak, the Scout Night chairman, has announced. "We expect that over 5 new Scouts will be -enrolle during the Fall Roundup", Jozwiak explained, "and these boys will have an opportunity to get in on the fun and adventure of Scouting as soon as they become Scouts/' Jozwiak said that information about the location of Scout Units in the Kishwaukee district is available from the Scout S@rvice center, 338-3448, and that parents whose sons want to be Scouts may ask for the names of institutions that usetheScout program in their areas. But the world cannot know--nor can we, his parents-- WHAT he will become! A man of character--loyal, trustworthy, courageous? A leader--strong, capable, resolute? A friend to many--kind, unselfish, understanding? Identification is so easy to establish. But character is the product of careful moral and spiritual training. The religious atmosphere of our home, the earnest participation of our family in the worship and life of -the Church--these will determine oar son's destiny . . . the path in which his footprints will be known. sr •?:: ."../I A •it. * -• •xmMm. Without o strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and support the Church. They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support.
