Deputy Matt Schulz, who was patrolling in the vicinity, was the first on the scene. Later, Chief Deputy Henry Nulle said Shackleford I was bowling at the time and only a vague description of the gunmen was obtained by his wife. The intruders gained entrance by posing as deputy sheriffs and telling Mrs. Shackleford they had information about her husband. The two pulled stocking masks over their heads and brandished a.38 calibre revolver, ordering Mrs. Schackleford into the bedroom, where they tied her and her two sons, Dave, 13 and Don, 11, with lamp cords pulled from the bedroom lamps. Leaving them there, the two robbers ransacked the remainder of the home, ripping two telephones from the wall as they worked quickly. Mrs. Shackleford! managed to free herself in time and hurried across the street, where she called the sheriffs police. Several squads responded to the call. The robbery 1s still under investigation. Mr. ;Shackleford operates the Volo House. e DiWDm One of the most festive and unusual Christmas trees in McHenry this season is the one at the John Solchenberger home at 607 S. Barreville road, which is decorated with 350 handmade ornaments of different kinds, all fashioned from egg shells. / Although activity at the McHenry post office has increased considerably each day during the past week, Postmaster CeRoy Smith says the volume ran about 49,000 pieces (letters) less than a year ago from Dec. 9 - 1$. This trend is i|i keeping with most other offices, including Chicago. ,^,/F Mr. Smith attributed the lower volume to the fact that mailers think in terms of weekends and many have failed to realize that Christmas this year is part of the last weekend. He added that much mail is delayed when it is not sorted into city and out-of-city delivery. Anything not designated for delivery in McHenry is sent to the North Suburban facility, where it is sorted by a large work force and returned. PLAINDEALER PHOTO Court Upholds City-Locker Land Ruling Decision Permits Use Of Property As Service Station The State of Illinois Appellate Court, Second district, has affirmed the determination of the Circuit court of McHenry county in the case of the Hugh Lockers and Herman Scholles versus the city of McHenry. The latest ruling would permit the plaintiffs' property to be used for an auto service station as requested. The property in question is a parcel of about 28,000 square feet located on the southwest corner of Elm and Third streets. The plaintiffs, the Lockers, entered into a lease with the Scholles, then owners of the property, in 1956, with an option to purchase. This they did in 1961. Two years later, the Humble Oil company signed an option to purchase approximately 16,000 square feet of the property from the Lockers, subject tothe condition ttf&t it would be able to construct and operate a service station on it. That portion optionee! to Humble has a frontage on Elm street. Opposition of the city followed a long period of zoning changes that accompanied the fast growth of the city.
