JANUARY 19, 1968 - PLA1NPEALER - PG. 11 EVE LEVESQUE FUMB BREVE FOR PALSY ENDS ON SUNDAY There are only three days remaining for you to make your contribution to the annual drive tor funds for the benefit of cerebral palsy victims. So much is being done to aid these unfortunates, mostly children, and every dollar counts. Housewives, working mothers, and teenage girls are giving time and effort to make house calls in behalf of the fund drive. Won't you do your share by giving? Mrs. Marie McKim, who has a full time working schedule, is chairman of the drive and is receiving assistance from Barbara Caron, Pixie Lundy, Mrs. Helen Streske, Petey Schmidt, Nancy Matthesius and Doris Brennan. Others include Kathy and Diane Klapperich, Gerry Jensen, Lois Parent!, Marge Olsen, Sandy Betts and DeeDee Levesque. NORTH FOR "SUMMER" SCHOOL Miss Ivonne Diaz who hails from Santiago, Chile, is attending summer school at McHenry high for the next eight weeks. The 19 year old miss is the daughter of Hilda and Eduardo Diaz, also of Santiago. Ivonne arrived in this area last Friday afternoon and is making her home with us. Her home is located as far south of the equator as we are north, and for that reason, summer started in that hemisphere on Dec. 21. Fall begins March ' 21 and she will be leaving here ; about that time to return to Miami, Fla., for the flight home. Her personality, warmth and ; charm leave nothing.to be desired and it is sheer joy to watch ; her excitement with each experience. She has snow in the mountains near her home, but did develope an allergy to the cold when she arrived on the east coast. She and her companions are members of the American Youth Exchange,, Inc. (a mm - profit organization). To our knowledge, this is the first time students in this program have 385-4141 and has tiro sons. When the young lady finishes high school she will go (hi to the University and ultimately hopes to follow the medical profession, too. We have no doubt that our family will benefit far more from the encounter than our lovely guest. We are learning Spanish words and phrases with less dexterity than a kindergarten student. But her English continues to improve hourly. She and DeeDee have become sisters and Jane Frost is another part of the trio. Her religion (Catholic) was no problem since Lorraine and Gene Frost have been most gracious about adopting her also, Slid held her in as high regard as we do. She attends services at St. Mary's church, and will soon be visiting in Mundelein to meet a priest who visited in her country. Senor Diaz operates a huge farm and has many hired hands where they raise watermelons, peaches, strawberries, and other crops. She prefers swimming in the Pacific ocean to using her own pool. We hope that she will be warmly received by all who meet the charming miss. LADIES OVERCOME HANDICAP Since there was no water in the beachhouse when members of the Ladies of the Lake met Thursday, Jan. 11, they obtained some from the neighbors next door to brew the java, and all proceeded as planned. The women, under the leadership of president, Carrie Kurth, voted to have a white elephant auction sale for theirv February meeting. The gals<rN * are asked to bring useful items which no longer fit the scheme of things in one household but could be just what another lady has been looking for. Louise Hammerstein has graciously consented to run the affair with proceeds going to the club to carry on their benevolent work. Mrs. Minnie Potter and Margaret Herzog who have been attending regularly, have joined the membership. Lois Parent! states that dues for 1968 are now payable. During the social hour Louise in the latter duly by Patty O - dom. Nancy Matthesius, Pixie Lundy, Jackie Whitney, Kathy and Diane Klapperich, Gary Kumpula, Jackie Fisher and Gary and Bob Brand participated. John ScarbrOugh and Dick Sanford each bowled a 191 ga,me with Dick also recording a 522 series. Gerry Jensen turned in an impressive 212 game with a 501 series. Nancy Piatt brought in honors for the distaff side with a 195 and 492 series. Melinda Adams and Ginny Hocin were fabulous' with their 162 and 171 games, respectively. You didn't stay home because it was raining or snowing, or because you had a slight headache. You went--by horse-drawn wagons or carriages--a much harder trek than it is today. ^ Maybe because it was harder, people appreciated it mora Maybe in that era of pre-modern conveniences people had a better sense of values. They seemed to know, at any rate, what was really important. Of course, the church is just as necessary today as it was in Aunt Miranda's day. Certainly the complexities of our present generation make life's problems seem increasingly abundant. Hadn't we better go to church next Sunday-- and see for ourselves?
