State Et eiysiuf jfe am Education In The World The following is the second part of an article prepared by Harry L. Page, assistant superintendent of Public Instruction for the state of Illinois, following his twenty-two -day tour of five European countries. This article explains the views ^experienced in Greece. GREECE "Greece offered an entirely different experience than Yugoslavia. The climate was similar. As I commented on Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, Athens, Greece, was comparable to Southern Texas in climate. I arrived in Athens on Nov. 6 and immediately began the seminar or. education in Greece. x "Greece is in the midst of a ^traumatic experience. This ancient cradle of learning and democracy has been under military rule since last April. It is rather difficult to discover what the average citizen feels about the present state of political affairs. Some are relieved by the establishment of order even if by a military government; others are restless. Athens has always been a leader in the) Republican form of government dating back to 300 B.C. The average Athenian is aware of this and is "somewhat disturbed by the thought of military rule. There seems to be developing a serious doubt as to the validity of the claim that constitutional government was overthrown to keep a Communist inspired revolution from developing. "Compulsory education in Greece dates back to 1834 when the first law was passed requiring seven yeafrs of education. Presently the government is considering the adoption of a new law raising it to ten years of education. In 1836 secondary schools, or high schools, were established for those who qualified. This consisted of either a three-year Classical Greek Secondary School or a four-year college preparatory secondary • school. In 1837 the first stateowned institution of high education was established. "Kindergarten is, and has always been, a private matter. The elementary school graduates are admitted to secondary schools, called gymnasiums by examination only. Others, who wish to continue, are trained in technical and/or trade schools'. Religion still plays a large part in the educational program of Greece. A course in religion is common to the curriculum. Both Ancient Greek and Modern Greek are taught in the gymnasiums as well as French or English in all six grades. Logic, Psychology, Latin, Physics, Chemistry, as well as the regular courses found in the curriculum in the United States, '(A NEW BATHROOM FLOOR COSTS ONLY $16.30) FREE DEMONSTRATION FkASltC FLOORING »»"> iA Permanent Floor . . . Greece is also witnessing a shortage of teachers and needs a large scale building program. The need for consolidation of school districts is felt and plans are being developed alpng this line. It is interesting to note here that the local boards of education are composed of the school superintendents in a given area plus one member of the teachers' union and one judge. The principal board of ediicatipn serves under the minister of education. It is difficult to assess the future path of education in Greece due to the political situation. I can say that there seems to be some challenge to the ancient classical belief that Truth is absolute. This classical approach tends to be leaning towards a more scientific approach where Truth tends to be relative and has a lot to do with the existing circumstances. Webelos Den 2 donned costumes for their communications skit on Station N.N.I.G.N. (No news is good news). To everyone's enjoyment a roving reporter interviewed a senator, eskimo and football coach, getting their opinions on world affairs. The colors were presented and retrieved by Den 4. The mother of Den 3 served pop and cupcakes. Webelos Den 3 have been setting up the chairs and tables for the meetings and doing the cleaning up.
