University of Illinois research indicates that of 11 herbicides tested all produced more effective fcontrol when placed in the shoot zone rather than the root zone. The study indicates that present herbicides need to be placed rather shallow, where tl)py can be absorbed by the emerging shoot. The shoot is that part above the seed. HEALTH HAZARDS A^even-year study of home health hazards indicates that 64.2 percent of the accidents involved medicines; 12.5 percent, household preparations; 5.7 percent, pesticides; 4.6 percent, paints; 2.8 percent, cosmetics; and 10.2 percent, miscellaneous causes. CASUALTIES A recent newspaper report revealed that 26 Americans were killed and 170 wounded last. year every day in Vietnam. The National Safety Council reports that 22 farmers were killed and approximately 2,000 were wounded every day last year on America's farms. Farmers! please be careful around machinery, livestock,' chemicals and gasoline. HERBICIDES Soil characteristics influence the effectiveness of soilapplied herbicides. For example, Treflan performs well on sandy soils, low in organic matter, when applied at a rate of one-half pound per acre. But best results occur on high or- ' ganic matter soils when the rate' is three-fourths pound per acre; Atrazine performs in a similar way. Randox leaches readily when used on soils with low organic, matter content such as sandy, soils. iSlt On soils with high organic matter, Ramrod plus Atrazine may be more effective than Atrazine alone. Incorporating low-volatile herbicides may improve their performance.
