PG..4, - PLAINOEALER-FRI., FEB. 16, 1968 Ice To( FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken froin the files of Feb. 16, 1928) Nick pitzen, father of Mrs. Joe N. Miller, of Mc Henry passed away at his home in Almena, Wis., Feb. 15. Mr. Pitzen was a brother to John J. and M.J. Pitzen of Pistakee Bay and was well known to many of the McHenry residents. Thomas A. Bolger has announced that he will be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for state representative at the primary on April 10. The Boy Scouts of McHenry have been busy this week painting the fire hydrants about the city. Mrs. Anna Sherburne, 71 years old, died in her home in this city, Feb. 13. Another one of McHenry's familiar old landmarks will soon pass out of existence due to the fire which practically demolished the Mort Ritt jewelry store on Elm street. The little building is probably better known and will be better remembered than many of the more imposing structures owing to its name of "Tempus Fugit" which was perched high over the door and which attracted the attention of passer sby. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Wagner moved this week from the Quinn cottage east of the river to the Jack Nichols house. (The small sum of 29 cents secures one of the many useful articles at the Wm. H. Althoff Hardware, West McHenry, during the Leap Year sale, now going on. TWENTY - FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 18, 1943) Gerald Reed, teacher and coach at the local high school for the past seven and a half years, has resigned from his duties here. He has received an offer to teach in the Navy Pre-Flight school at (Cornell college, Mt. Vernon, Iowa.^ Msgr. C.S. Nix is bringing Jto McHenry under the auspices St.\ Mary's church, the J.B. /'Rotnour players in a special productiorf of "The Rosary", knowrtv as "The Sweetest Story Ever Told". It will be presented as a matinee , and evening., performance at fhe fiigh school' in this city. The Red Cross serves as the connecting link between our armed forces and their families. Wherever our troops may go there too goes your Red Cross. And always it occupies a vital role on health and accident prevention fronts in your community. The seventh farmers meeting was held Feb. 15 in the local high school. John H. Brock, McHenry County farm advisor, was the discussion leader. The topic for discussion was the improvement of permanent pastures. On Feb. 22, John Looze of the Snow White Dairy Co., will be guest speaker. He will speak on "Increasing Milk Production." Friday and Saturday only closing out. Still some lovely winter hats at 98 cents. Mrs. Elizabeth Pick, Green street. High prelates of the Catholic church from nineteen states and one foreign country were present in St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, la., Feb. 17, when the Most Rev. John J. Boylan was consecrated in a two hour ceremony. He is the new Bishop of the Rockford diocese succeeding Bishop Hoban. The Ringwood Pure Milk local is sponsoring an appreciation party for George Young, president of the local for six years, who has been ill for the past few months. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 6, 1958) The 1958 "Good Citizen" award sponsored by the national society, Daughters of the American Revolution^ has been awarded in McHenry to Miss Patti Blake of Country Club subdivision. Snow masterpieces have been created by talented local residents in the past two weeks.. The snow princess, complete with wand, beautifully sculptored and painted by Mrs. Loretta Wilhelm of 204 Main street can be seen night or day, since the work is spot lighted in the evening. Mrs. Harold Michels Of McCullom Lake has created a pink elephant in her yard. Walter Walsh, 76, a life long resident of the McHenry area, died Feb. 5 at Memorial hospital following a brief illness. The Bald Knob hotel, a land mark in the Pistakee Bay area since the early days of the century, was destroyed by fire Monday afternoon. Firemen from the McHenry and Lakemoor stations and the Johnsburg rescue squad answered the call. Damage to the building was estimated by Mr. Johnson at about $70,000 and equipment lost was believed to run between $10,000 and $15,000. Mr. and Mrs. Nick M. Justen were surprised at their home on Green street by a group of relatives on the occasion of their forty-fifth wedding anniversary. A wedding of local interest was solemnized inthe Ringwood Methodist church Jan. 26 at which time Miss Mary Linn Hogan became the bride of Mr. Earl Sonnemaker of Trivoli, 111. Rev. G.
