The Easter Seal Therapy center, which conducts a sevenpart program for county residents regardless of their ability to pay, is supported entirely by local donations, Mrs. Louis Duddleston observed. Right now many volunteer workers xare preparing an informational letter for mailing to more than 12,000 county residents seeking a contribution to the easter Seal Society of McHenry county. Groups at Crystal Lake, McHenry,Harvard and Woodstock are addressing envelopes and stuffing the informational material for the mailing scheduled for early March. The fund drive, with a goal of $16,000 will come to a climax on Easter Sunday, April 14. "Some people may not receive a letter because it hasv •feeen necessary to trim our -mailing somewhat," Mrs. Duddleston said. "We invite those who do not receive a letter to give us their support by mailing •their contribution to the collection center at the State Bank , of Woodstock. We will mail your Easter Seals to you promptly." A small portion of the Easter Seal funds are allocated nationally for research but the largest proportion (88 percent) remains in McHenry county to provide physical therapy, summer speech clinic, summer swim program, summer camp, and a loan pool to provide crutches, wheel chairs and walkers for those who Seed them. Robert Steffi, a professional j physical therapist, who is executive director of the Therapy .• center, listed some of the types a of conditions treated at the center.„> We treat children and adults who have cerebral palsy, strokes, multiple sclerosis, :birth defects, orthepedic conditions, speech problems, neurologic problems, muscular dystrophy, arthritis, polio, muscular strains and sprains, amputations and congenital defects," Steffi said. "Those are the main categor- » ;ies and of course we find many \ specific conditions within those categories. We accept physician referrals from all doctors within the county; many county residents are sent to us by doctors from Chicago, Waukegan, Rockford, Elgin, and cities in southern Wisconsin." The Easter Seal Society of McHenry county is in its seventeenth year of operation. Eeven though it has an established fee for each treatment given, the actual fee paid is based on an ability to pay. Thispov licy applies to McHenry county yresidents. Patients outside the jKcounty will be treated but must : pay the full established fee. Last year 2,239 patients received a total of 7,325 physical therapy treatments. In the •i. speech, program 1,700 speech I- lessons and examinations were given. Nearly 100 pieces of e- ' qjgipment were 'loaned free of charge. Eight handicapped > children took advantage of the instruction and fun offered by f the summer swim program. ?< Sale of Easter Seals at Easiter time is the main source of revenue for the local organisation. Other sources include £ fees charged for services reny- dereci, special eontributions-as - J- memorial gifts, legacies and ' corporate gifts, and special fund V t raising events sponsored by the board of trustees. "No money is received from the federal or state government or from any local government," Mrs. Duddleston reminded. Both adults and children are treated at the center.. Youngest patient currently is 18 months old and the oldest patient is almost ninety. Tuberculosis can be cured a lot faster today than it used to be, but it still takes months. For the best results, treatment should begin in a hospital properly staffed and equipped for the treatment of this number one infectious killer. The availability of the booklet to organizations and individuals was announced by Gene H. Graves, director of the department. Graves said, "This publication presents, in non-technical language, a clear and accurate assessment of Illinois' resource problems and suggests appropriate remedies. It offers evidence of the need for the broad action program to be financed by the proposed $1 billion resource development bond issue." Called the "Water Plan Booklet" the illustrated report condenses into 32-pages the major findings and recommendations of the comprehensive study t "Water for Illinois, A plan for Action". The Water Plan itself, formed the basis for legislation enacted last year to provide for allocating the $1 billion and administering the program -- subject to approval of the bond issue referendum next Nov. 5. Prominent on the booklet's front and back covers is a colorful design that will serve as the symbol for the proposed state-wide program.
