GRUNERS RETURN FROM CALIFORNIA After a nice ride to Crystal Lake, courtesy of Lois Huehne, the Gruners took off for Chicago to the Union Station and boarded the train for California. This was a most adventuresom? journey and they arrived in San Francisco after a 4 hour delay and various stop overs due to rock and snow slides. San Francisco was aglow with lights and people. They took a bus to Santa Rosa and spent 8 days visiting old friends, wineries and missions, and also the Presidio and a boat trip to Fisherman's Wharf. Next stop was Bakersfield to visit Mrs. Gruner's cousin, Bill and his wife who own a motel there. They took trips and dined out frequently. Then on to Corona where they visited Ed and Anne Nicklos, and went on more trips for the next two weeks. Saw Bible Land, a great work of art in sand, then the Lawrence Welk Mobile Estates, which are built on a terraced mountain with beautiful landscaping through out. The higher level homos had breathtaking views. After dinner at Escondido they went to Mount Palamer to visit the planatarium, up a winding road with sharp twists and curves to the top which was 5528 feet above sea level. Saw the SS Queen Mary at Long Beach and visited Port O'Call, a harbor area with small chan- OPTOMETRIST Dr. John F. Kelly At 1224 N. There are many sailors returning from Vietnam in this area. On to Palm Springs to take a tram way ride. This cable car is suspended only on wires at a height of 8,560 feet and it was a strange feeling to look down. At the summit they ate a leisurely dinner in a lovely restaurant. It was 37 degrees at the top and 92 at the bottom, and as it was above the clouds only one side had sunlight. Otto's camera which he had received for Christmas really got a work out. They spent two days in Las Vegas where it was 95 degrees. They left Riverside by train and arrived at Elgin some days later. They had a wonderful trip but they enjoyed coming home again. The Quinns had promised to pick them up at Elgin, but due to car trouble they were met by John Neuharth in his car accompanied by Mr. Quinn and driven home. The Gruners are surrounded by new cactus plants and if any one would care to visit their jungle they are welcome to drop in for a visit. • • Palestine is about one-third the ?ize of Indiana, and has much barren land, and the lowest dry land on earth -- the area around the Dead Sea, 1290 feet below sea level.
