PLAINDEALI.it PHOTO Mu$in' and Meanderin' Extensive Road Program Undertaken With news stories in our small community in a serious vein of late, it is with pleasure that we devote space this waek to something we consider to be of very heartwarming human interest, involving some of the nicest of our younger generation. The story really had its start as long as two years ago-- possibly longer--when, what is now the sixth grade class of Sister Roberta at St. Mary's parochial school paid a visit on an elderly neighbor, Winfield Pierce. At first there were just a few who called on the kindly Mr. Pierce, but his genuine interest in their friendship soon prompted more of them to make • frequent calls. Just over a year ago, one of his prize possessions at Christmas time was the huge greeting card, bearing signatures below individual pictures, which they brought to him in person. Last Friday they remembered that it was Mr. Pierce's eighty-fifth birthday, which this year would be observed at the Villa Nursing home, where he has been residing for the past couple of weeks. After school hours in the afternoon, twenty-five members of the class, transported by their mothers, paid a visit to the home with their teacher, Sister Roberta. The latter played the guitar and the children danced and sang, eventually attracting the attention and applause of a good share of the residents of the home. Later, a nurse described the entertainment as one of the most pleasant hours many of the patients could remember. At a time when reverence for age is too often a forgotten virtue, a large bouquet is in order for these thoughtful young people ' and the devoted teacher who has instilled them (Continued on page 3) The McHenry Township road district will undertake many road construction projects this coming year according to Highway Commissioner Clarence Regner. He added that the engineering is 90 percent complete and most easements have been secured. One of the larger projects will be Barnard Mill road from Hogan farm to the Barnard Mill bridge, approximately one and one half miles. This road improvement will provide better drainage, modify curves, increase sight distance, and give a 10-inch base gravel and 3- inch (B-5) blacktop. . Joint School Meeting Held At a joint meeting of School Districts 15 and 156, held this week, members met in executive session to discuss teacher secretary, custodian and secretary salaries. Approval was . given to the employment of Miss Marcia Balstrode to teach physical education at Junior high school next year. It is also possible she may instruct French classes. The resignations of Miss Nicola Rear don, Junior high English- Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Elaine Worthy, Junior high physical euucati on teacher, and Mrs. Bonnie Duewel, third grade teacher at Hilltop, wer£ accepted. A lengthy discussion took place in which Dr. Carl Bergstrom, superintendent, and Sam Sullivan, architectural representative, for the architectural firm of Frazier, Raferty, Orr "'and Fairbank, discussed possible means of solving the problem of classroom space hext year. A numbed of suggestions were considered at length. Another project due for immediate improvement is Church street, Johnsburg between two schools. This road has a width of 24 feet and easements have been secured from residents to widen the blocklong area to 40 feet and install curb and gutter. The remainder of Church Street to Wilmot road will use the drainage provided by the 60 foot right of way. This project will be completed during the school summer vacation period. NUMEROUS PROBLEMS The third construction project will start at Church street and will end at May avenue on Wilmot road. This area has a high traffic count with drainage problems and many depressions and with very little gravel base on it. It will have to be totally reconstructed. The village of Sunnyside will share in the expense of this project. Also in the construction program is Weingart road, a township road from Bay road to Rolling lane, approximately one half mile. Since the traffic count SEEK MEMBERS FOR BLOOD BANK DRAWING MAY 19 The McHenry Kiwanis club is making an early appeal for residents of the community to join the Blood Bank for which the next drawing will be made Sunday, May 19, at the Legion home. Edward Guettler may be contacted for an appointment. During the past year, it has been possible to replace blood for a retired man on Social Security and a two-year-old boy as well as many others. The club asks that local residents not wait for an emergency. If a person registers but does not qualify, an alternate can be found. is under 400 cars a day this road will be constructed under Motor Fuel Tax. This road also will be constructed to state standards and is considered to be a real asset to this community when completed. A road which is of great importance to the Wonder View area, possibly will be slated for reconstruction by the Township Road district if all legal technicalities arc resolved. Widoff Drive, which is one half mile in length, from Wonder Lake road to Hickory, on Greenwood township line, is reported to be badly needed to secure school bus, fire department and ambulance service in that area. Most lots are vacant and individually owned; therefore, improvement can be made, depending on a public hearing outcome. ADVERTISE BIDS These road projects will be advertised for bids in the near future and opening of the bids will take place in May to the lowest and most qualified biduer. Mr. Regner also stated he will soon start his secondyear in office and with much planning and engineering already completed, will have one of the largest road programs in road and maintenance construction ever attempted. These projects of construction and maintenance will take place in various areas throughout the township, with four miles of total reconstruction, 10 miles of seal coating, 3 miles of remalting. Mr. Regner said that this year, he will attempt to implement a more complete maintenance program by the township crew. The new equipment that was purchased last year and-this coming year will help to upgrade the road maintenance program.
