Hanson pinpointed the vital part people have in the success of the county-wide hospital at Woodstock on the eve of National Hospital Week. The nation- wide observance starts on Sunday, May 12 and appropriately is built around the theme, "Your hospital - People Caring far People". This year's observance at Memorial hospital will start with the presentation of a new flag by the Woodstock Veterans of Foreign Wars. By putting the curtains on their rods while still wet, then slipping a second rod through the bottom hems to weight them down as they hang. good'/yeafT I Scholarships Awarded In Conservation Each year the McKenry county Soil and Water Conservation district's board of directors presents two scholarships awards to a conservation workshop held at Northern Illinois university in DeKalb. The district, along with several McHenry county garden clubs, sponsors these awards to a week long, all expenses paid workshop involving all aspects of conservation , Soil and water conservation, water and air pollution, fish, forestry and wildlife management are only some of the areas covered. Any boy or girl in McHenry county of high school sophomore, junior or senior age is eligible to receive one of these awards. Anyone wishing to receive one is asked to make a request in writing or phone to the District office, or to form advisor. Winners will be announced at the May 7 board meeting. In other business at the recent monthly board meeting, Chairman Kenneth Fiske announced that tree planting is now in full swing. Over 120,000 trees are scheduled to be planted. It is too late to order trees through your district office, but anyone needing trees planted may call the district office. A pond management workship is tentatively planned for May 22. McHenry county has more farm ponds than any other county in northern Illinois. This is an enviable record, however, not all of these ponds are adequately managed. A highly productive and successful farm pond does require some know-, ledge and care. This management workshop will be held at an actual pond site in the county and will be a working session. Conducting the sessions will be acquatic weed control specialists and fish biologists. Invitations will be issued to all present pond owners and those completing construction of a pond. The next district newsletter will also carry further information. The Soil and Water Conservation district board and technicians have completed the soil interpretive maps for the city of Marengo. Cary has request similar mapping. When completed these maps are of extreme importance and value in aiding in factual zoning decisions. Officials in those county cities already mapped continually use the maps to determine zoning classification which would be warranted in certain areas. With the fast growing population, and the concurrent rise in industry, businesses and services, and agriculture required, it is on the utmost importance that each piece of land is used for the purpose to which it is best suited. Harvard high school's board of education has also requested engineering assistance in eliminating 5 water and erosion §doofre/»tt problems on the high school land. Chairman Fiske also proudly announced that the district's booth at the recent World Flower Show in Chicago received Governor Kernels Sesquicentennial award, in the special agriculture category. Subject of the booth was "150 Years of Conservation" featuring photographs before and after the initiation of accepted conservation practices. the annual Soil Stewardship Week, recognized nation-wide, will be held May 19-26. This year's theme is "A Time For Initiative". The SWCD will provide all county churches with the materials to be used on Soil Stewardship Sunday. Last year more materials were distributed in this county than in any other county.
