PG. 8, - PLA1NDEALER - FRI., MAY 3^ 1968 Heather is like millions of cithers in this jittery modern world. Since we can't "cerebrate" and also "emote" one secret of controlling our emotions is to "think big". Or even count to 10, or take the "cancer" viewpoint mentioned herein. Use the booklet below with your children, too. It beats chemical tranquilizers! By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE F-568: Heather J.t aged 25, is a nervous housewife. "Dr. Crane," she moaned, "I am always getting upset over some little irritation. "So my life is not happy. I am afraid or angry or worried all the time^ "How can a person learn to control her emotions and lead a placid, happy-go-lucky existcnco?^' EMOTIONAL CONTROL Control of our emotions is largely a matter of controlling our environment. And that "environment" refers not only to external reality but also to our thoughts. "Look not on the wine while it is red," states the Bible. This pertains to the external world, and is superb advice. Often it will also help to "think big" for then your ap- F R E E CLEANING AM) ADJUSTING. on all makes of hearing aids by an experienced man. If a petty domestic problem intervenes and you feel like chewing out your mate or your child,, make it a rule to say to yourself: "Suppose my doctor told me I had ^ncer and would not live anothe@> weeks? "Would I become so disturbed over a spilled glass of milk or muddy footsteps on the cleaned kitchen floor?" Even a broken window or a dented fender of your car will then be taken gracefully in stride. When Thomas Edison was a young man, working for $150 a month, which was then a huge salary, he invented an improvement on the stock ticker at Wall street. The board wanted to buy his patented invention and asked him to meet them. He debated as to what prices he should ask them. He says he figured he should demand at least the equivalent of his year's earnings, namely, $1,800. But then he grew more reckless and decided he would even ask $5,000. When they met with him, they said they had appreciated his work in keeping the stock ticker in shape and knew of his invention, so they wondered what price he wanted for the patent. Edison wet his lips and tried to say $5,000 but he couldn't get that figure verbalized, for he decided it was such a big amount that they'd think he was Jesse James, putting a gun to their heads. In desperation, he stalled for time by saying he hadn't thought about the matter, so what did they consider it would be worth to them? Please notice that this was the "Reversible Why" strategy which I have often urged upon you salesmen, teachers and parents who are barraged with questions by your youngsters* The members of the board re/r plied: "Well, Mrf Edison, we couldn't afford to pay a cent more than $50,000 for your patent." Edison was dazed and hoped his pause was construed as inner deliberation. Then he told them he'd rather do business with them than anybody else, so he would accept. , The next two days he states that he walked the streets, pinching himself to be sure he was real! And he learned to think big thereafter! Send for my booklet "How to Control the Emotions" enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 20 cents. Let your children use it, too. /Always write to Dr. Crane V. care of this newspaper, enclosing a long stamped addressed envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.) "Those three are always together," remarked Lisa's mother. She was referring to her little daughter, who is seldom seen without her beloved collie, and her well-worn rag doll. They are contant companions. "Lisa is very sensitive about friends," her mother continued. "And this week she came home from Sunday School with a very important lesson. Her teacher told her about God's love, and how He never leaves us. Lisa came skipping into the house and announced, 'Now I have three good friends, and the best one of all is Jesus.' " Little Lisa had indeed learned a wonderful truth. All of us need to discover it for our own lives. For every life needs the companionship of God. t.et your church bring this hope and promise to you. * Sunday Exodus 33:7-23 Monday Joshua 1:1-7 Tuesday II Kings 2:1-14 Wednesday Matthew 11:7-19 Thursday John 14:18-31 Friday Philippians 1:3-1 1 Saturday James 4:1-10 <5iZ> + <3±2? + <5±2? t <siz> + <Si2? + <S±Z? + <Si2? + <s±2? + <S±2? t <3±2? t <S±2? t <£i2> CHAIN ©"3LAK2SS EVANGELICAL COVENANT CHURCH 4815 N.
