Recent Boating Regulations To Be Enforced This Year There are some new rules for those who go down to the lakes and streams in sailboats and motorboats. According to the Illinois State Bar association, the new regulations were adopted by the Illinois General assembly last year, but did not become effective until the boating season was over and it was too late for them to become well-known or widely enforced. This year will be a different story. Enforcement of the new Boat Registration and Safety Act is the job of the State Department of Conservation Officials and other authorized police officers. They have author- ITH ARNIE! Authentic Shirts for Boys by VAN HEUSEN* in "417" VANOPRESS1M Now with new SOIL-AWAY Presenting ... a championship shirt in 8 exciting colors. Any vessel hailed by fin inspection officer, the law says must stop and lay to. LIFE PRESERVERS One of the new rules is that sailboats, like motorboats, must have one life preserver for each person on board. The life preserver, ring buoy, buoyant vest or buoyant cushion must be in good and serviceable condition and be of a type approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. This quipment must be within easy reach of all persons on board. Another new requirement calls for the registration of all sailboats over 12 feet in length. Every such sailboat mu4 have an identification number issued by the state or by the federal government or other state having a federally-approved numbering system. The number must be displayed on both sides of the bow of the boat in block letters at least three inches in height. The requirements are the same as those previously in effect for motorboats. The Act increases the fee for boat registration from $3 to $4 and certificates of registration expire after two years, instead of three. The pocket size certificate must be available for inspection anytime the motorboat or sailboat is in operation. NEW REGULATIONS The state also adopted new regulations for the ventilation of motorboats to prevent accumulation of exhaust fumes in the boat. All motorboats, except open boats, using fuel having a flashpoint of 110 degree F. or less must be fitted with at least two ventilator ducts, fitted with cowls or their equivalent for the efficient removal of explosive or inflammable gases from the bilges of every engine and fuel tank compartment. A new time limit also has been placed on the reporting of boating accidents. Kan accident results in property damage in excess of $100 or a personal injury which incapacitates a person for more than 72 hours, a report must be filed within five days to the Department of Conservation. An accident involving loss of life must be reported within 48 hours. Warriors Shellacked By Elgin Larkin 8-2 By Bert Hagemann The Warriors were thoroughly trounced last Thursday on the concrete hard diamond of Elgin Larkin by the margin... of 8-2. The Warriors played another one of those horribly sloppy games, committing six errors behind pitchers Roy Ingram and Steve Salter. The Warriors held a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning on the basis of a hit and run triple by Tom Janik and a sacrifice fly by Doug Belohavy. However, in the fourth, with the sacks full, one of the Warrior outfielders misplayed a single into a home run and the big Blue of Larkin were never headed thereafter. Once again the ping-pong Warrior attack could not muster up the clutch attack as they stranded runners early in the ball game. However the offgnse would not have made any difference as the Warriors played a sleepy, lackluster game. Baserunning miscues abounded, and the defense left much to be desired. Only four runs were earned by Larkin in this game, and perhaps the orange and black were looking forward to their double encounter with North Chicago. Although physical errors are part of the game, mental errors cannot be excused, and the Warriors will have to sharpen up considerably if they are to continue their winning ways. The game was McHenry's best round of the year with four boys shooting in the 30's and this was the 5th conference win without a defeat. Scores for McHenry were: Tim Martin 38, Harry Hans 38; Bob Mauch 39, Gary Becko 39 and Nelson Adams 40. Other scores were Mark Domoto 41 and Frank Cuda 42. Friday Grant came to McHenry only to go down in defeat 161-189. Again the McHenry team showed tremendous balance in scoring. Frank Cuda and Mark Domoto led the team with Block Lights With Screen Sometimes a house is positioned so that the headlights of passing cars shine into front windows. While hardly a serious problem, it is a bother, especially during the summer when draperies often are left open. A front yard screen will eliminate the headlight nuisance. One can be built either close to the house or near the street, whichever is the more desirable position. To judge just how tall and wide the screen should be, put together a team of two family members, one to drive a car up and down the street, the other to stand where the screen will be built, holding a sheet or something else large and lightweight. With the sheet, you can determine just where the headlights strike and what will block them. For the screen, use a fairly solid pattern. The board-onboard is good, as are slats if not spaced more than a quarter inch apart. Build the screen of a good outdoor wood like Douglas fir, ponderosa pine or white fir.
