Lodge said the Conservation Department has received numerous requests for information concerning the firearms act. These have been forwarded to the Department of Public Safety for reply. MIUER I r Woodstock ^ • • 338-0032 • Talk has been going 'round in the make up department of this sports section for some time about us running pictures of fellow workers in this column. John thought he should be first, but that Texas grapefruit deal killed his chances. Anyhow, we knew we could find a better looker. So - we managed to get a picture of the gal who hits the keys to put all this copy in shape - Linda Susan Meyer. Sports Editors having our furnace torn apart (dangerous, you know), repair our roof before the rain pours through, sell us special dirt or something for our lawn, and any number of other urgent needs for our safe survival. Better deal with a local businessman. We'll know where to find him. Thanks Earl, "The Grapefruit' BY THE OLD TIMER LINDA SUSAN MEYER We almost scratched Linda from the race Monday morning when we visited her coop and sang out a cherry "Good Morning" only to get a grumpy Hello that sounded "lo". Then we remembered it was Monday morning and remembered our younger days. She came up with a big smile and John didn't have a chance. From Lucy Jones House, Leesburg, Florida: I remember when the first car of coal came into our township in the early 1880's -- a half ton limit to each family. Neighbor visited n e i g h b o r to d i s c u s s t h e i r many experiences and to be shown the half ton of black diamonds sharing a corner of the wood lot, fully as wonderful in those times as the first astronaut ride in the 1960's. Coal pushed the ash hopper out of business. The ash from s t o v e s and f i r e p l a c e s was carefully preserved for the making of soft soap in the spring. Hard soap was yet a coming novelty. I remember the first bar of "Bouten" soap in the neighborhood. Only the w e a l t h i e r families -- those in the $5,000 class, enjoyed the privilege. I only knew one family in that class. Were we happy? Yes. What you don't know doesn't hurt I was born at L i v i n g s t o n , Illinois, June 26th, 1876. Trophies were awarded to the above winners of the McHenry County A.J.B.C. Who's over. next? We'll look 'em Just got to thinkin'. They disqualified the Kentucky Derby winner because somebody gave him a pain killer. Just read of a baseball pitcher who has to soak his paw in brine between innings to avoid blisters. And there have been some famous ball players, who couldn't have thrown without shots of cortisone or some such drug. Must be a horse of a different color. " SPRING SCENE . . . Spring brings on Ashing and few spots are more beautiful than the Colorado Rockies. Nearly 20 million rainbow, cutthroat, brown and mackinaw trout are harvested annually from Colorado's streams and glacial lakes.
