Indian Guide Program Popular NEW CORN PEST A new pest appearing recently i^\Cornfields could become troublesome to corn growers and a problem in the state. According to Dr. Ralph Sechriest, entomologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey, a small white insect-like arthropod known as a garden symphylid is infesting cornfields in several counties in Central and Northern Illinois. First discovered in 1965 in Woodford county, garden symphlids did severe damage to a 10-acre area of a cornfield in Whiteside county last year and caused minor damage in Ogle, a neighboring northern county. One of the most successful and rewarding of the YMCA programs in the McHenry area is the Indian Guide activity in which fathers and their young sons gather twice monthly for companionship and varied activity. About thirty men and boys make up the two local tribes, e carrying out such projects as construction of small torn toms and other handicraft, as well as enjoying games. All of the activity is carried out in the various homes of members. The large torn torn shown in these pictures gears the name of the Sioux tribe and carries the Indian name of each member. One of the attractions for the young boys, ranging from first through third grade, are the feathers they receive for the completion of the various projects* They also take delight •In occasional camp-outs. Since many of the present members will be forced to leave the Indian Guide program because of age requirement, more father-son teams are desired. Randolph, director of the Department of Public Safety, last week sent congratulatory notes to E.F. Donnell", president of Montgomery^Ward and Co., Chicago, and to Arthur M. Wood, president of Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago, complimenting them for their recently announced elimination of the sale of firearms by mailorder and of the sale of firearms to minors. Actions of the nation's two largest direct mail firms, which also are among the nation's leading retail stores, comes at a most auspicious time, Randolph said, as registration of firearms owners in Illinois has just started in the department's Firearm Owner's Identification division of Springfield. PLAINDEALER PHOTO HISTORY OF COUNTY TELLS OF DEPRESSION From the galley proofs of the History of McHenry County - 1968: "The nations stock market crashed Oct. 29, 1929. Factories began to close, throwing people out of work. Hundreds of business leaders committed suicide in the larger cities, unable to take the failure when their financial houses of cards collapsed. When Franklin D. Roosevelt took the reins as President in March 1933, he began a series of fireside chats that brought the personality of a U.S. President right into the living rooms, via radio, of McHenry county homes. , He ordered all banks in the United States closed on March 6, 1933. Most people agreed this was "hitting bottom". There was no place to go but up. The banks were closed to prevent further runs and out of this came the Federal Deposit Insurance corp. The people of McHenry county retained their sanity, good sense and stability through all this, even though cash money was extremely scarce and some stores had to issue fiat currency or script. One department store in Harvard, for example, was said to be the only place on the street that continued to pay its billsfm cash. That went on for some time. Adults, when they could find work, were paid 25 cents an hour for handy men and 50 cent an hour for a good carpenter.Clerical help in a plant got $100 a month, executives $250 a month. In those days a work week was 48 hours and some companies paid time and a half after 48 hours if it was worked. A young single person got 10 to 15 cents an hour or perhaps $1.00 a day. This grueling schedule lasted until 1940 and was finally knocked out by World War II." FOREVER BEAUTIFUL BRAND Nylons 65c 3.25 OZ. SIZE TOOTHPASTE Ultre-Brite Only 47c SIZE PKG.
