DON PEASLEY PHOTO With the sixteen Miss McHenry queen candidates busily engaged in the charm course and the contest on June 12, other workers on the McHenry Marine Festival program concentrate on other aspects of the big affair. Last year's colorful attraction will be exceeded in several categories, Frank Low, general chairman said this week. The Marine Festival is scheduled for Sunday, July 21 with a parade, drum and bugle corps competition and other in-between highlights. One event that promises to out-headline last year's show is an International Day Sidewalk sale. Another is the Drum Corps Magic, with several bigger- name units signed. The sidewalk sale, which drew huge crowds last year, will top previous attractions, predicts Low. Chairman Allan Leibsohn is obtaining signs and data for an international flavor. Stores will assume a nationality of their own, with decorations and costumes in keeping with the spirit of this Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event. A water fight among fire departments; programs for the young people of the community including dance bands; and a water show after the parade are among other attractions. The Miss McHenry contest is sponsored by the McHenry VFW Fast 6400. The charm course has several participants including Mrs. Carol Jepsen. The girls attend instruction classes given by Mrs. Jepsen with others assisting. Changes in the crowningprogram and selection on June 12 at the McHenry VFW are in the . plans. The McHenry auxiliary will sponsor the new Miss McHenry in the Miss McHenry County pageant on July 10. She will also reign over Marine Festival fun on July 21. SUNDAY -- DAY OF PITFALL FOR PURSE AND PERSON Last Sunday was such an unfortunate day for Marcia Ridout of 805 Larkdale, Wauconda, that she might well have followed the time-worn advice to "have stayed in bed". At least she should have stayed away from McHenry, as the following series of incidents indicate. Miss Ridout was driving east on Pearl street about 10:30 in the evening when Officer Norman Williams of Wonder Lake ' stopped her and made out a ticket for driving 50 miles an hour in a 25-mile zone. Sgt. Kranz, who was accompanying Williams, left the squad car at this point to assist another officer in an investigation. Williams proceeded up Riverside drive and stopped at the intersection with Elm, only to look in the rear view mirror and find he was being followed closely by a driver who just happened to be the same Miss Ridout to whom he had made out a ticket minutes earlier. Realizing that she was travelling at too great a speed to stop at the corner, he attempted to avoid being struck, but the collision was inevitable. Williams sustained a whiplash injury and was still in traction in McHenry hospital Tuesday morning. Miss Ridout was more fortunate from a physical standpoint, but suffered a blow to the billfold when state police handed her the second ticket of the evening for driving too fast and being unable to avoid an accidents- Mental Health Educator Joins County Center SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE IN NURSING FIELD Applications for scholarships in nursing and related fields such as therapy or technical training are now being accepted by the Woman's auxiliary to the McHenry hospital. Hardacre was travelling alone, heading north on the blacktop, when his auto apparently went out of control on the crest of a hill. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Theron Ehorn and the body removed to the Ehorn chapel in Richmond. Deputies who investigated said the auto left the road, seemed to continue 55 feet in the air and then another 157 feet across both lanes. The vehicle then left the road on the east side, took down six trees and travelled another 193 feet before coming to rest on the east side, facing south. Hardacre's body was found 140 feet south of the auto, in the path of his vehicle, and deputies speculated that the car may have rolled over him. GERALD W. PETTERA Gerald W.
