NEW CUSTOMS: RICE FAVORS Of course your friends and relatives will throw^rice at your wedding. It's a custom that started in the Orient and has been going on since , ancient times» A new custom now sweeping the nation over involves preparation of small packages of rice that are »given as favors to all wedding guests. The rice is tinted in various colors or in one color to match or complement the wedding scene. It is placed on small squares of net or tulle, lined with polyethylene and tied with ribbon. Sometimes the rice is even perfumed. To prepare these simple rice favors, here's what to do: First, measure 3 cups cold water. Add vegetable coloring to the water as desired - either 2 teaspoons yellow, 2 teaspoons blue, 3 teaspoons green or 3 teaspoons red food coloring. Stir well. If you like, you also may add a few drops of your favorite perfume or cologne. Next, stir in a 1 pound, 12-ounce package (4 cups) or regular milled white rice. Let soak. When desired shade is obtained, drain rice, saving colored' water for re-use if you wish. After draining thoroughly, spread tinted rice on a cooky sheet. Place in a preheated 250 oven and let dry for,. 15 minutes0 Four cups of rice will yield aboistj)32 bags each containing about 2 tablespoons. For deep colors it is best to partially cook the rice in the colored water. Selecting The Engagement Ring Prior*' to the announcement of your engagement, which is the privilege of the bride's parents, your fiance has presumably discussed your intention to marry with both his parents and yours. Traditionally, your fiance's parents should also call on your parents, or if distance makes this impossible, write to them. With the blessing of both sets of parents, your thoughts will turn to the selection of an engagement ring. This is a gift from your fiance, and must be chosen within the limitations fit his budget. However, since you will wear the ring, and may have some preference, suggest that you might accompany him to make the final selection from among several that he has tentatively chosen. Today, many engagement rings come with the matcliing wedding band. Your jeweler will show you these and make arrangements for your fiance to purchase the set if you wish. At the same time, it would be well to decide whether or not your fiance will wear a wedding ring, and make plans to purchase his at the same time. $ Your jeweler will inform you about weight, brilliance, color, and perfection of diamonds, and the various types of settings. However, although diamonds are traditional today, many brides prefer other stones, or choose to wear only a wedding ring. Reasons For The Change In Anniversary Gifts The first nine years of marriage usually are devoted to anniversary gifts for the home - clocks silverware, china, crystal and electrical appliances - because these are the years when the husband and wife are building their home and centering their attention on growing children. The next five years include gifts such as furs, textiles, jewelry and watches* These are the years when the children are sufficiently grown up to permit parents to go out or travel more than they could in the early years of marriage. The next four years are devoted to gifts of the home again, as the children begin to take a new interest in the house. The remaining years call for gifts for personal use and adornment.
