Smitty's Auto Topics by George Smith A HOT TIP Here's a motoring tip that is late for a fellow and a $300 motor replacement bill. He noticed his heat indicator at the highest point, and thought he could drive to the next station. Going on for about 20 miles he finally got to one and had a leaky water hose replaced. Several days later, water in the oil confirmed that the motor block had a crack caused from the overheating. Here is a case where a tow service would have saved a lot of money. And need we say that Smitty's Sinclair warns you to never drive with an overheated motor. Not even for a short drive to 3602 W. Elm street. Our road service could save you a bundle. Both will be in Bull Valley Acres, but the one on Wednesday, May 22, will start from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gregg, while the one on Saturday, May 25, will begin at the Phillip Masslichs'. At the entrance to Bull Valley Acres, which is just west of the intersection of Bull Valley and Fleming roads, east of Woodstock the road forks and the Greggs' home is to the right, the Masslichs' to the left. Anyone interested is invited to join club members on these expeditions, which will be from 8:45 a.m. to about noon. Seventy - five children from Coventry school, Crystal Lake and their three sixth grade teachers were guided by fourteen members of the McHenry County Bird "club on a hike through Veteran Acres, Crystal Lake, on May 8. For most of them, it was their first experience in such bird-watching, and they found it proof that learning can be fun. Before the walking started, Mrs. Kenneth Fiske Jr., of Woodstock, gave them valuable pointers on bird identification. Mrs. Fiske then led one group of children, Mrs. David Gay of Wonder Lake, another and Mrs. James Kecht of Woodstock, the third. The hike ended at the Outdoor Education center, where the children and teachers ate sack lunches they had brought, and Mrs. Stout treated the club members to doughnuts and coffee. The large number of Auduboners who turned out on Saturday, May 11, were led in two groups by Everett Thomas and Miss Leta Clark, both of Woodstock, through the Mass property. In the woods and fields or along the ponds they heard, saw and identified forty-eight varieties of birds. Perhaps the most interesting among them were woodcocks, both blackbilled and yellow-billed cuckoos, rufous-sided towhees, and many bobolinks. Also rosebreasted grosbeaks, great crested flycatchers, a broadwinged hawk, and numerous warblers including goldenwinged, Cape May and blackpoll. Reports were still disturbing about Allerton park, which lies along the Sangamon river near Monticello. The famed baronial park of the late Robert Allerton, where the University of Illinois has been conducting valuable research and which was to have been a joy to mankind for generations to come, continues to be threatened with ruin. Despite conservations' pleas and alternative proposals, the US Army Crops of Engineers is intent upon drowning half of the park to create the Oakley reservoir. The forests contain over 1,000 species of flowering plants, 80 percent of them growing in the bottomlands. Of the forty-two species of birds that nest in the forest, thirtyfive species nest in the bottomlands and two percent of these species are restricted to this habitat. These 814 acres of bottomlands would be bulldozed of vegetation and submerged by the dam.
