J PG. 6, - PLAINDEALER - WEDif MAY 22, 1968 Chicago Angler Emitters 11 - Pound Salmon In State Fishing Contest mamasm^n^ss Springfield, 111., May 17 - A Chicago angler entered an 11- pound coho salmon in the State Fishing Contest, the Illinois Department of Conservation announced today. The coho was taken while fishing from the shore of Lake Michigan north of Evanston and was identified by a fishery biologist. Coho salmon is one of the three species added to the list of eligible species in the contest. The others are the chincock and the steelhead. The minimum weight is eight pounds Warriors Oil Of Bow To Cats 6-2, 6-2 By Bert Hagemann When all the chips were on the line Saturday, the Warriors were not up to the required big effort. McHenry bowed twice to the talented Cats of Libertyville by identical scores of 6-2. The double win, coupled with a Dundee split, assured Libertyville of at least a tie for conference laurels, while the orange and black slipped down into third place in the North Suburban scramble. The scores of both games were identical Saturday, and so, were the scripts. In both games Liberyville jumped off to a first inning lead, only to see the Warriors peck away until the game was a one rain affair. Both games saw the Cats salt it away in the fifth inning with McHenry Sportsman's Club Celebration of the Decoration . Day holiday will begin early, with a Memorial Shoot on Sunday, May 26th at the McHenry Sportsmen's Club trap range on the west side of Pistakee Bay, starting at 11 a.m. Shooting will continue until dark. Winners in the various contests will be rewarded with luscious eating Jopat tender-aged steaks, chickens and rock cornish hens, in contests set to produce wins for all classes of shooters; good ones, fair and mediocre. The favorite Hi-Lo-White Bird Shoot nets a prize for the high scoring gun, plus one for the lowest tallying shooter, and one for the lucky shotgunner who breaks the white target. Other contests in this vein on the days program are the double, triple and quintuple White Birds Shoots, in which a prize is won for every white target broken, plus one for the high score. lb ugh competitionmindedgunners will compete in Winnertake - all; Annie Oakley, and Protection Shoots. Here they separate the crackshots from the shooters. Shells and hot refreshments will be available all day in the club house. Trap chairman Len Huhn, Ingleside, posted the June shooting schedule, with Sunday prize shoots on the 9th and 23rd and Saturday afternoon practice sessions on the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. These run from 1 to 4 p.m. All are open to the public. A business meeting is set for Thursday, June 6, at 8 p.m., at the club house. three run bursts as the opportunist Cats wasted hardly a hit all day. Both games was McHenry fritter away prime scoring chances as men in scoring position languished on base while Warrior batters looked at called third strikes. The Warrior performance offensively was lethargic as the gusty wind blew everything to left field up in the air, and the Warrior lumber could manage only two extra base hits in fourteen innings against the strike throwing Cat hurlers. The Warriors drove ace Bill Beckman out in the second inning in the first game, only to have Gorsline to come in relief and hold them to one run the rest of the way. The second game saw Shaper on the ropes in four different innings, but the clutch hit, long the bane of Warrior batsmen this season, was lacking. Defensively and mentally we did a good job, but the sleepy Friday night prom goers were not up to their best effort, and the Libertyville nine made few mistakes to help us. Take nothing away from our opponents, they were a classy, well coached team, and they earned their conference wreath by beating some of the best when they had to. We wind up our season this Friday with a game against Woodstock on their diamond. Two wins this week will still earn us a share of second. Let's hope we can rebound with a brace of victories. Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Sports Editor The last bell will soon be ringing for high school seniors. Those four years go past mighty fast. In athletics, coaches hate to see some of those outstanding seniors leave the ranks. But, it always surprises us to see how the younger fellows develop in one year. A new crop always comes along to take over. We do hope some tall ones show up for basketball. SUDDEN THOUGHT -- Wonder what would happen if the American Indians marched on Washington , D.C., set up their wig-wams and decided to stay? OBSERVATION -- It doesn't seem long ago that President Charles de Gaulle was telling the U.S.A. aad Canada how to run their countries. Haven't had any calls since our Sox have started to take charge of the American League. As soon as we get our first team in there look out! Just learned that a dippie is a hippie who takes a bath once in a while. PICKUPS: "As my wife was backing out of the garage, she hit the garage door, ran over our son's bicycle, drove across the lawn, tore up the roses, and then she lost control of the car." It is believed that this hobby started about the year 1840 when the first postage stamp was issued^ in England. This was the "Penny Black" stamp which has the picture of Queen Victoria on it. There are many ways to collect stamps - saving all countries, special countries or topicals (flowers, space, animals, Kennedy, etc.) Another phase of stamp collecting is cover collecting. When you save an envelope with a stamp on it, this stamp is called " on cover". The most popular covers are the "First Day of Issues" which can be obtained by sending to the government before the day it is to be issued. It is not hard to start collecting stamps, all you need is a looseleaf folder. Put all the different kinds of stamps you find on the incoming mail in this folder. When you mount stamps do not glue them to the paper. There are "Stamp Hinges" on the market for this purpose which are very cheap in cost. This is the best way to save the value of the stamps. It is easy to get stamps once your friends and relatives know you are saving them. When you get a stamp on an envelope, just soak it in water until it is easily removed, dry it between a couple of blotters and mount. Good luck in your new hobby. Mix l'^cups cottage cheese, one teaspoon chopped sweet gherkins, pinch of garlic salt and dash of pepper. Place a quarter of the mixture on each of four crisp lettuce leaves, dust with paprika. Top with 4 or 5 whole Norway sardines on each cheese mound and serve. Four servings. Never over cook cheese. For quick cooking or melting, cut, shred or crumble cheese into small pieces. As of that date, anyone who acquires or possesses any firearm or ammunition must have a Firearm Owner's Registration Card. Cards must be obtained by application to the State Department of Public Safety, and are issued only to those persons who meet State qualifications for gun owners. Cost of a permit is $5.00. It is good for five years. The Illinois State Bar association has received many inquiries about the new law, which was enacted by the 1967 legislature as Senate Bill No. 1350. Here are some of those questions and the answers given: Q. Who is prohibited from obtaining a gun owner's permit? A. The State will not issue permits to narcotic addicts; persons who have been patients in mental hospitals within the prior five years; mentally retarded persons; persons who within the past five years have been convicted of a felony or been confined to a penitentiary. Also, to qualify, one must be 21 years of age, or if under 21 he must have the written consent of a parent or guardian who has a valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card and must never have been convicted of a misdemeanor other than a traffic offense or been adjudged a delinquent. Q. Do we need a Firearm Owner's ID card for the old muzzle loading flintlock that hangs over our mantel? A. The law applies to any firearm device "designed to expel a projectile or projectiles by the action of an explosion, expansion of gas or escape of gas. . ." collector's items included. Only air guns, spring guns or BB guns which expel "a single globular projectile not exceeding .18 inch in diameter." and safety construction or signaling devices are exempt. Q. The law says no one under 21 years old can obtain a Firearm Owner's Identification without written consent of a parent or guardian who holds a valid card. My 11 year old son loves to hunt, but his father is hospitalized and I don't hunt. What does the law say about this? A. It doesn't rule out your son provided you or your .husband, even though he is hospitalized, qualify and obtain a registration card and then give written consent to your son's application. If he is otherwise qualified, a permit will be issued to him. Of course, because of his age he needs the written consent of a parent or guardian to obtain a hunting license too. One other thing: Any parent or guardian who gives consent to a minor to hold a registration card will be liable for any damages resulting from the minor's use of firearms or ammunition. The public Safety department has by law a thirty-day period during which to investigate the application and issue the card. Applications should be mailed by June 1 to be registered by the July 1 effective date. Application must be made on forms now available from city police departments, sheriffs offices, registered firearms dealers, currency exchanges, and county clerks. A pamphlet explaining all of the law's provisions can be obtained by writing to the Department of Public Safety, Firearms Owners Identification Section, Room 507, Illinois State Armory, Springfield, 111. 62702.
