PG. 6, - PLAINDEALER - FRI., MAY 24, 1968 TEAM TITLE By Jan Harris** Eight teams came to Mc- Henry C.C. to compete in the North Suburban Conference Championship which was won by Coach Cuda's McHenry high team. Tuesday, May 21, fiftysix boys started teeing off at 12:30. North Chicago, Barrington and McHenry were favorites. As the boys made the turn after 9 holes the McHenry team went 7 strokes ahead. Leading the team at this point were Frank Cuda 37, Bob Mauch 38, Tim Martin 40, Mark Domoto 40, Gary Becko 42, and Jim Michels 42. Barrington was second and North Chicago third. As the boys started coming in it was becoming evident that the McHenry team had not let up, but put more pressure on the other teams. First in was Tim Martin with a 40-42- 82 total, next came Frank Cuda shooting two over par until he came into some trouble on 15,16 and 17 holes, but still shot a 39 for a 76 total. Gary Becko came in with a 39 for an 81 total, Mark Domoto shot a 42 for an 82 total, and the clincher came when Bob Mauch shot an even par 36 coupled with a 38 for a 74. This put McHenry 16 strokes ahead of Barrington. Bob Mauch was in at 74 and a tie for 1st place with Randy Harmon of North Chicago. A playoff was played and Bob won on the 1st hole and received 1st place. Frank Cuda placed 3rd, Gary Becko tied for 6th and Tim Martin and Mark Domoto tied for 3th. The McHenry team had 5 boys in the top ten. Comments by Coach Cuda: "This was a great team effort, the team realized one good score was not enough, we needed 4 good scores. The team had 5 good scores. Not one of our McHenry boys shot over 90." This is the first time McHenry has won the conference golf championship since McHenry entered the conference in 1053. Coach Cuda Was well pleased with the team and feels the up-coming Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen can keep up the winning ways. McHenry varsity finished with a 12-win, 3-loss record and the sophomores had 12 wins and 2 losses. Summaries of the Conference Match: TEAM: 1. McHenry 313 2. Barrington 329 3. North Chicago 333 4. Dundee Cardun :itry Nine, 4 Trip - 3 On Tuesday of this week, the McHenry High School golf team captured the North Suburban conference golf championship. The McHenry squad had a team total of 16 less strokes than the nearest challenger. Shown with their trophy are left to right: Jim Michels. Tim Martin. Bob Mauch, Frank Cuda. Harry Hans and Mark Domoto. This is the first time in over 18 years the McHenry team has won the conference championship. During the regular season, the McHenry squad had a record of 14 wins against only 3 losses. PLAINDEALER PHOTO By Bert Hagemann The Warriors dropped their sixth conference game of the season last Tuesday on the Cardunal diamond by the narrow margin of 4-3„ However, in the defeat two items stand out on the positive side. One is the fact that Roger McKenzie won't ever beat us again; he is graduating. Also, for the third straight game, the orange and black played heads up, intelligent baseball except for one play. However, the one play resulted in McHenry playing a Dundee triple into a homerun, and this marker stood up for the winning tally as Mike Freund was handed the defeat. Freund pitched creditably enough, allowing six hits, one walk and striking out three in his varsity starting debut. His mates got to McKenzie for three runs in the fourth inning on three hits, a walk and an error, but Dundee came right back in the fifth with their tainted marker and it spelled defeat. McKenzie was his usual tough self, as he whiffed nine Warrior batsmen, five times with men on base, and pitched himself out of two minor jams. McHenry could manage only four hits against his left-handed slants and so once again it was the old story of lack of firepower which helped spell defeat for McHenry. Today we are scheduled for our last contest of the season at Woodstock, a win will assure us a third place finish, and will be the first time we have finished in the first division in five years. WARRIORS -3 AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL TRYOUTS SUNDAY, MAY 26 This Sunday, at 2 p.m., all boys interested in playing American Legion baseball are4 asked to report to Freund field behind the Admiral building. Forty four Northern Illini Bowmen members and guests came to the May Marathon "Nite Shoot" in spite of a May shower forecast by the weatherman. Before a fire could be kindled, a deluge sent the shooters under cover and the Marathon was continued in the rec room of Phyllis Keinz on Fleming road. Thanks to the hospitality of the Keinz, the entertainment proceeded with guitar and harmonica music, songs and skits. Annual Golf Day Be Held June 12 We suppose the happiest fellow this week is Coach Chuck Cuda since his MCHS golf team won the North Suburban Conference golf championship. Chuck has some sharp golfers on his team and has some good ones coming along for next year. Sports Editor One of these days we expect to see the powers that be in major league baseball give the game back to the hitters. A .260 hitter to-day is quite a ball player. There was a time not so long ago that a hitter had to crowd .300 to be considered worthy of carrying a bat to the plate. Be Wise Shop In McHenrf The annual McHenry Golf Day is again coming to McHenry on Wednesday, June 12, 1968. This yearly function is sponsored by the McHenry Chamber of Commerce with participants from the nonmembership of the chamber as well as members of the organization. Eti Pieroni and Ed Buss, co-chairmen of the event say that this year plans to be an extremely successful day and tickets are now available. They may be obtained from Mr. Pieroni at Bimbo's or Mr. Buss at Buss Ford Sales or from other Chamber of Commerce ' board members. The Day will start at noon on June 12 and will include golf in the afternoon, dinner in the evening with hundreds of prizes to be awarded. The function is open to the public and all golfers are urged to obtain their tickets as soon as possible. Easy Clean-Up Spread a sheet of plastic wrap over your kitchen area for easy clean-up afterwards. Liquids won't leak through. This feature makes it particularly useful when disposing of coffee grounds. * * * HIGH MORTALITY RATE: Of approximately 5,000 newspapers started in Indiana (alone) since 1820, barely 300 are still operating. USE THE CLASSIFIEDS We congratulate Coach Cuda and his classy group of golfers. Competition in the North Suburban is rugged in all the sports. When you win the top spot, you have to have more than luck gqing for you. You have to have what it takes when the chips are down. Read the story on this page to see how the boys came through. When people tell us they do this or that to pass the time away, we wonder what the heck is wrong with us. There are never enough hours in the day to do what needs do in'. The lively ball seemed to favor the hitters for a while. Then came the slider and all the new fangled deliveries. Starting pitchers to-day put all they have into six or seven innings then turn the job over to the short relief man. Once in awhile a hitter or the whole team will break out in a rash, but many games this year Tony Sandler and Ral Y o u n g , a team of g r e a t l y talented entertainers who create more music and meaning in every song than any song has the right to expect, are out with their fourth album on Capitol, titled Sunshine Days ...
