w ••(il Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 31, 1928) John Moore, an employee of the Hoosier Construction company, was quite seriously hurt when at work east of McHenry. Twenty students will graduate this year from eighth grade. They chose the sweet pea as their class flower, scarlet and white as the class colors and the class motto "Persistence Wins". The members of the Royal Bunco club surprised one of their members, Mrs. Henry Freund, at her home. The event was planned in honor of her birthday anniversary and came as a complete surprise. A special election to decide the question of daylight saving time in McHenry was held May 26. That the issue was not a popular one in this city was made evident by the defeat of the issue with 104 votes against and 59 for the proposition. TWENTY - FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 3, 1943) Miss Amy Harrison of Ringwood was selected as one of the two girls chosen to represent the state at the National 4-H club camp, Washington, D.C. The camp has been discontinued for the duration, therefore Miss Ebrrison will not attend the camp but is to be congratulated for her record that has won for her the highest 4-H honor that Illinois can give. Miss Harrison has not only been a club member for nine years, but she has led a 4-H club of younger girls for the past three years. She is now taking a nurses training course at the University of Wisconsin. 'Henry Ahrens, age 75,passed away May 27 at his home in West McHenry after an illness of one week. As part of its new policy to help citizens learn more how candidates stand -- to help people'become acquainted with issues and viewpoints before they vote -- Farm Bureau has intensified its voter information service, Henry Edgerton, executive secretary of the McHenry County Farm Bureau, said this week. 5 In addition, the Illinois Agricultural association provides a rating of the candidates when incumbents seek re-election. Edgerton explained am "excellent" rating means the legis- • lator actively supported Farm Bureau's position. "Good" means he was helpful when agricultural legislation was considered but has not voted with the IAA as often as one earning. a higher rating. The IAA states in its Farm Bureau Voter's handbook that candidates with"excellent" and "good" ratings merit the support of farmers. Edgerton cautioned McHenry county citizens to check the district in which they live since the county is split. The 32nd district includes Dorr, Nunda, Grafton, and Algonquin townships. The 33rd district includes the remaining thirteen townships. MINOR ACCIDENT Gilbert E. POISON AND KIDS-BEWARE!, Children are bundles of energy and curiosity. New sounds, smells and tastes are a challenge. They have a G-man's ability to ferret out the most secret hiding' places and an ape's agility for climbing into them...Just like your kids! Have you watched a child pick up an unattended soft drink bottle and drain it?...Cute?...maybe. Extend it further tho and you can see the element of danger lurking here. That sweet smelling stuff in the turpentine can, that new detergent so pink and yummy looking, that can 'of cleaning fluid with the daisies on it; or those pretty pills... "think I'll try one." Statistics show that adult carelessness is the cause of thousands of accidental poisoning cases in children every year. Don't let your child become a statistic.
