The youngster died Saturday night in McHenry hospital, where she was taken Thursday in critical condition. The accident, which involved twelve persons occurred at 5:04 o'clock on Memorial Day on Chapel Kill and Bay road. Lawrence W. Johnson of 4901 Crystal Lake road, one of the drivers, told sheriffs deputies he was unable to say what happened, and no information could be obtained from the father of the two children, Ralph Briggs, of Annabel street, McHenry, who was seriously injured. Deputies said it appeared Johnson was driving south on Chapel Hill road when his car skidded 43 feet in the north lane before the impact. Thfe second car, according to deputies left .84 feet of skid marks before the vehicles collided in the north lane, apparently in a headon crash. Johnson was charged with improper lane usage. Riding in the Briggs car besides the parents, Ralph and Barbara, both of whom were placed in intensive care immediately upon entering the hospital, were 5-year-old David, 7^year-old Charles, Michael and Vicky. When it was deemed that Michael should have immediate surgery, a helicopter was summoned and the child removed at 9:30 on the holiday night. In the Johnson car, besides the driver, were James Johnspn, his bfother, Johh Fisher of Island Lake, Diane Oeffling of St. John's street and Diane Loggins of Orchard drive, and Maureen Moore of Eastwood Manor. 21-Year-Old Husband Dies In Auto Crash Wilkinson Car Out Of Control On Highway 176 The Memorial Day weekend in McHenry was marked by more tragedy and unfortunate events than any similar holiday period in recent years. They included the death of a young husband of only a few weeks; a two - car auto crash which brought critical injuries and death to 'members of one family; and the return of a young Marine killed in Vietnam. The dead man, killed in a one car crash, was Francis Wilkinson, 21, of 214 N. Friendly avenue, Lakemoor. He died in McHenry hospital at 8:38 o'clock Wednesday evening, May 29, several hours after his car went out of control and crashed. Wilkinson was driving on Rt. 176, a mile west of Island Lake, about 5:45 o'clock when the accident occurred. His auto skidded 54 feet across the east-west lane, according to sheriffs deputies, travelling onto the shoulder on the north side, then continued another 204 feet before striking a culvert and spinning around to face west. They reported that the engine was completely torn out of the vehicle. BORN IN MINNESOTA Wilkinson was born Jan. 21, 1947, in Minnesota. He was employed by Sun Electric in Crystal Lake at the time of his death. Survivors are his wife, Susan Abel Wilkinson; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Wilkinson, of Barnesville, Minn.; two sisters and three brothers, Jeralyn, Ramona, John and David at home and Milton, Jr., of Moorehead, Minn.; the paternal grandfather, Francis Wilkinson, of Barnesville, Minn.; and the maternal grandmother,. Mrs. Myrtle Johnston, of Forest River, N. Dak. The body rested at the George R. Justen & Son funeral home Friday, after which he was transferred to the Dobmeier chapel Barnesville, for last rites at ®p2 o'clock Monday. Burial was' in Memorial Gardens cemetery, Moorhead. Mayfield, 19, whose last address was listed as 3809 W. Main street, McHenry, was sentenced last week by Judge William M. Carroll in Circuit court to serve from one to five years in the state penitentiary at Joliet. He was found to have violated his probation at the hearing. Mayfield was arrested on March 4, 1966 and charged with burglary at the Louis E. March! residence on Trey road, McHenry, and with taking jewelry, a radio and $150 in money. He was indicted on two counts by the jury later that spring. After pleading guilty to burglary, Mayfield was placed on probation for three years by Judge Carroll in July of 1966. In December of that year he pleaded guilty to violation of curfew and later the same month was accused of committing theft under $150 for which he was sentenced to seven months in Vandalia. At the conclusion of this sentence in the fall of 1967, he was arrested for striking someone and convicted. Unable to make bond, Mayfield was in jail until ms hearing last week.
