It was such a lovely day last week, and I do enjoy sittin' in my pretty yard, with the flowers and lilacs, in the shade of my apple tree. The sky was so blue, and the wind was soft and warm, with the scent of honeysuckle sweetenin' it. Suddenly, I remembered that the next day was "Decoration Day," the day we pay tribute to all the fine young men who have MCHENRY HOSPITAL Patients admitted to McHenry hospital during the past week included Donald W. My heart felt sad, at knowin' they would never be able to live to enjoy all the lovely things in this wonderful old world.- So many fine fellows, the best we can produce, are gone. Somehow, the sun didn't seem so bright, and the air wa'n't so sweet, in wonderin' how many more would follow all the others. When that beautiful flag of the United States o* America flies against the blue o' the sky, it brings a tear to many an eye, Pm a thinkin', and many a heart was pretty heavy. I remember., years ago, when I used to watch the parade, and then trek to the village green, for the "Memorial Day" program, with my "pa," and we would standthere and watch the colors go up. There wuz alius a tear in Ms eyer as the voices joined in unison, to the tune o' the "National Anthem". When I wuz young, I didn't understand that tear, and thought it wuz patriotic sentiment. It wuz when I wuz grown, and I had the same feelin', and the tear would come to my own eyes, that I realized the thoughts that brought them. Perhaps, someday, mankind will be smart enough to arrange to live in peace with his fellowmen. Seems like an awful shame, that with all the lamin' and progress^ that is goin' on, wars are bein' fought and there seems to be no end to them. I feel sure, if there wuz nothin' to be gained in perpetuatin' them, the wars would end in no time. It seems to this old lady that someone must hev a guilty conscience over the great loss of so many lovely young men. I wonder what the Great Father thinks of it all.
